Subject: Proposal for the Official Recognition of March 19 as “Gele Day”
Your Excellency,
We respectfully submit this proposal for the official recognition of March 19 as “Gele Day” in Lagos State, a day dedicated to celebrating the cultural heritage, beauty, and enduring contributions of Yoruba women to society.
The gele, a traditional headwrap worn by Yoruba women, represents far more than a fashion accessory. It is a symbol of cultural identity, dignity, pride, and artistic expression. Over generations, it has remained a defining element of Yoruba attire, prominently featured in ceremonies, celebrations, and daily life.
Establishing “Gele Day” will serve several important purposes:
•To promote and preserve Yoruba cultural heritage
•To recognize and celebrate the elegance and contributions of women in our society
•To encourage cultural education among younger generations
•To support local artisans, designers, and businesses involved in traditional fashion
On this day, women across Lagos State will be encouraged to wear gele as a symbol of unity, pride, and cultural appreciation. Public and private institutions, schools, and communities may also participate through cultural exhibitions, fashion showcases, and educational activities highlighting the significance of the gele.
Lagos State, as a center of culture, innovation, and diversity, is well-positioned to lead this initiative and set an example for cultural preservation and celebration across Nigeria and beyond.
We believe that the establishment of “Gele Day” will not only honor tradition but also strengthen cultural identity, promote tourism, and enhance community pride.
We kindly request the consideration and approval of this proposal.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Yours faithfully,
STAINAWA
