@agronomistryan1 Keeping him a little hungry will help him want to suck a bottle. If you overfeed them, they get lazy. Just think of how you feel when you eat a big meal.

@StallbaumerFarm Yeah. Bag sucking is not happening. He doesn’t really even want a bottle. So we’ve been milking mom. Making milk replacer and tubing him.

Anyone have experience with a calf like this? Front leg are bent back and to the side. Massive calf. Assuming it got cramped in womb and things had to bend to make room. Fixes? Or is it goodbye time. Born about 48 hours ago.

@agronomistryan1 Getting him to suck the cow is difficult at best. Try the bottle for a couple days. Much past that, you’re SOL.

@StallbaumerFarm Yes. But his resolve is obviously getting tested by the fact it’s not working…..

@ranchyplains I try to locate working facilities close to the water tank. Cows usually drive a lot easier if they think they’re going to water or feed.

My cows have their calves out on range. This morning it’s 3 degrees. A good patch of grass and cover is priceless. Even a mat of weeds is better than bare dirt. I firmly believe in letting cows be cows.

@idahobeef It’s not perfect, but over the long haul, I know I’m ahead with this approach.

@ranchyplains I have a catch pen with a head gate if I need it, but I try not to use it any more than I have to.

@dubyadirt I have similar questions and thoughts. The sticker shock on the initial investment really slows a guy down though.

The more math i math the more i want a dryer….. put risky wet corn in the bin last fall, ran the fans and it’s still wet. Do i want extra work? No but i also don’t plan on planting shorter day maturing corn. Is the yield worth the squeeze

@MaxROIFarmer Bags are handy at harvest. As was alluded to by other people, it just changes the labor dynamic at harvest time. They’ve paid most years…but so does storage in a bin. It works best in my neighborhood to have bags up by April 1. This limits marketing to a certain extent.

If you could largely eliminate the need for truck capacity at harvest and could run your combine at full capacity what is that worth to you? Just the ability to not need trucks at harvest, like you were going into bags in field except it doesn’t matter moisture/crop. Grain ready to ship over the winter. @KellyGarrett75 @JMCampbellFarms

@farmer_donn I don’t know what to think, regarding price. I think in central Nebraska there are more than normal being kept to breed. South, into KS, OK, and TX, the story is it’s very dry, and they aren’t being kept for breeding. I don’t know what is actually happening though.

@cattleNcrops83 Get the lacrosse. Worth the $. Comfortable (as much as those types of boots can be), long lasting.

Anyone have a brand of muck type boots they’d recommend? Been using dry shod and they are comfortable but don’t seem to last.

@angrycowboy1 Keep a log chain and a lifting strap in the pickup. They unlock a whole new level of usefulness for you. Saves your back….a lot.

I will probably never financially recover from this, but I’ve been saving and wanting one of these for about 10 years. It sure handy. If Cowboy has $.50 in his pocket, he will spend it.

It is absolutely amazing what a first calf heifer can do if she is allowed some confidence in her abilities and a 600 acre pasture instead of a corral,a barn,a birthing pen,and human micro management. This is now year 5o something of me fucking this all up #BaldyPorn
