@bestofstarwar I will go ahead and say it: The battle of Hoth is my favorite part of ESB. I mean there are other scenes in the movie I like but this battle's my favorite.

For the ESB, George Lucas decided that a battle on an ice planet was necessary because he felt it was easy to "cheat" in space, as the black background allowed hiding errors easily. With a white background, the effects crews would have to work much harder, and the effects would be much more impressive.

“Blink” from Doctor Who (2005) is still one of the greatest standalone sci-fi episodes ever made. Barely any Doctor, no giant spectacle, just pure high-concept terror built around the simple idea of statues that move when you stop looking at them.
