“It’s not just a knowledge-rich curriculum. It’s a knowledge-rich curriculum that is carefully sequenced. The ideal is that when we put a text in front of a child for the child to read, they have all the background knowledge in place to read the text and comprehend that text comfortably, but maybe not quite everything, so they have to reach just a little bit.” @DTWillingham explains the importance of coherent learning in the curriculum, in order to support reading comprehension and enable new learning. As soon as you understand this principle, you become a curriculum person. This kind of coherence is only possible if there is central planning in a school’s curriculum. If every teacher is left to his or her own devices in developing curriculum, you can have every teacher introducing the same content, and a failure to expose kids to maximal breadth and depth of content in K-5. Core learning about the world (seasons and animal adaptations, history fundamentals, civics basics) are foundations, too… foundations for comprehension and foundations for more sophisticated learning. From the a discussion of NAEP outcomes hosted by @JHUEdPolicy:

S’s completed a Socratic Seminar discussing Dr. Roper’s success as a scientist. The Think-Pair-Share routine before discussing in the seminar helps students prep their ideas, and a quick sticky note jot before the discussion helps get thinking solidified. @StarlaEScott

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!! 🔺To the teacher who has sacrificed time with family to prepare lessons, attend an after school parent conference, or attend evening school events… thank you. 🔸To the teacher who bought their student(s) a pair of shoes, food, Christmas gifts, etc. this year… thank you. 🔺To the teacher who comforted a student when he/she got a “boo boo” at school, just like their mommy or daddy would do… thank you. 🔸To the teacher who made a student feel valued for the very first time… thank you. 🔺To the teacher who believed every kid can succeed and helped every kid achieve those goals… thank you. 🔸To the teacher who championed for a kid that didn’t yet have a champion… thank you. 🔺To the teacher who has endured tough moments with kids who don’t yet know how to self-regulate and helped them work through their emotions… thank you. 🔸To the teacher who… THANK YOU. Teachers work tirelessly to support kids - each one with varying needs - physically, emotionally, and academically for 180 days of the year. Teachers spend more time with our kiddos during the week than we get to after school hours. Let that sink in. Being a teacher is often a thankless and exhausting job, but it is equally rewarding. When we measure data and statistics, we cannot measure the change we can make within another person’s heart. It’s not just about the numbers. It’s about seeing education as a tool for changing the future of every single one of our students. We must impact their hearts, which will, in turn, impact their minds, which will then impact their future, which eventually changes the world. Teachers are incredible humans who are vastly under appreciated. They are much more than just teachers of content. They are life changers. Thank a teacher this week. I promise you they deserve it.

4th grade students gain an understanding of how life experiences influence a person's perspective and opinion through studying the text "Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak."✨
Starla Scott@StarlaEScott

Role playing the Boston colonists from our story, Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak, was a hit in 4th grade at WB @WBESBulldogs ! I spy a printer, errand boy, mistress of dame school, midwives, and barber/wig maker. We love @WitWisdomELA in @MetroSchools ! @WaverlybelPTO
