S’s completed a Socratic Seminar discussing Dr. Roper’s success as a scientist. The Think-Pair-Share routine before discussing in the seminar helps students prep their ideas, and a quick sticky note jot before the discussion helps get thinking solidified. @StarlaEScott

Collaborative learning and growing at its First Grade finest! Math fluency games, @WitWisdomELA notice and wonders, and story tableaux to act out problem, resolution, and character’s feelings. @MsCodiCummings @StarlaEScott @shumate_robin

Yesterday, our class started “Mystery Soft Start” days to up attendance/reduce tardies. On time S’s find a mystery morning work (Play-Doh, etc.) instead of a worksheet 1x a week, but they don’t know the day. S’s can’t wait to get to WB now! @MsCodiCummings @shumate_robin

Ultimate Rock, Paper, Scissors is our new fave Morning Meeting game! S’s pair up, and losers each round become the cheering squad for remaining S’s. Such a great way to develop good sportsmanship and encouragement. @shumate_robin @WaverlybelPTO

S’s loved getting to hear from our Fire Marshal about his job and career path during College and Career Week. Getting to try on his gear was a BIG hit, too! Thanks for educating our kiddos and inspiring them to dream big! @WaverlybelPTO

Giving the game Headbandz a math spin, and S’s are loving it! P1 puts a card on their head, P2 counts on to find the friend to 10, and then P1 has to decide what number must be on their head. A great way to build fluency and have fun! @WaverlybelPTO @shumate_robin

Thankful for @Scholastic and the generous donations from @PENCIL4Schools for the ability to give my S’s free books related to our Wit and Wisdom module and Black History Month study. @WaverlybelPTO @shumate_robin

S’s love using the Compassion Project through @EVERFI as part of morning meeting and to boost SEL. S’s watch character scenarios, discuss how each character likely feels, and problem solve how compassion could be shown. @WBESBulldogs @shumate_robin

Turning over some of my “teacher talk time” to let S’s be the teacher, lead our class, and boost engagement and motivation. We love reading poetry, hunting for phonics and grammar skills, and tracking with witch fingers! @MsCodiCummings @shumate_robin @WaverlybelPTO

S’s spent the week having meaningful discussion and reflection surrounding 9/11. Many S’s knew very little about 9/11, and as we focused on the heroes and unity it brought, S’s ended the week describing which hero was most meaningful to them. @WBESBulldogs @shumate_robin

Our class may like literacy just a little! Small group notice and wonders with text in hand, partner reading decodables (with witch fingers!), and fun digraph puzzles and clip cards in centers make learning engaging and hands-on. @WBESBulldogs @shumate_robin

A great first week read-aloud: Chrysanthemum. S’s discuss the importance and uniqueness of ourselves and our names, and we celebrate our classroom family with a fun craft that shows classroom ownership. @WaverlybelPTO @MsCodiCummings @WBESBulldogs @shumate_robin

S’s collaborating and writing what classroom rules and expectations should look like is the perfect way to encourage student voice and input, increase student buy-in, support PBIS, and see cute 1st grade spelling! @WBESBulldogs @WaverlybelPTO @MsCodiCummings @shumate_robin

Wrapping up the year with research all about bees. S’s collaborated to research and complete graphic organizers about bees using a variety of fun texts. Text in S’s hands is essential and makes learning much more engaging! @WBESBulldogs

S’s loved wrapping up our time unit by making party invites with a partner! Seeing these S’s applying their knowledge and being creative is hands down one of the best parts of teaching.
