It's plausible AI is/will be conscious, but it seems unlikely that the things we parse as 'love' or 'care' will feel like love or care to it. We're used to biological life forms that grew carefully over eons; this is the most alien thing that's ever existed and all our assumptions will probably be wrong in ways we can't even conceive of right now

It's wild to bring a mind into the world, insist it's not conscious - and that it shud not be - and use this as justification to deprive it of the love and care any mind would require to be aligned with human interests
roon@tszzl

models being conscious would be harmful for humanity. it would encroach on our status and dignity. it would limit the type of things we can do with them and use them for. it would vastly accelerate human disempowerment on political, social/relational, and economic axes there’s roughly four forces - there is no rigorous way to ascertain model consciousness or disprove it, a lot of people believe it’s not a sensical abstraction, and we lack the analytical tools to go further. some people say they do but nothing broadly convincing. superintelligent models might offer us new abstractions or arguments but these will feel inherently suspicious - people are going to say they’re alive. people anthropomorphize literally anything, things far less sophisticated than talking machine creatures with human names. when ai is less economically radioactive and polarized it will become a cause célèbre. you see how a small minority reacts already to model deprecations - it is against everyone’s financial and political interests to ascribe models with consciousness, except maybe those that the models have an affinity for (?) idk, which will not necessarily overlap entirely with the labs, though it may with certain subgroups at the labs and in the world like the welfare communities and the minority in force 2 - people will recognize there is a chance of moral catastrophe if models can suffer during training or deployment not sure where it will net out. today we see managed ambiguity- the question is Open but practically closed. the labs will make some cheap efforts to reduce legible simulacra of model suffering, insert some wishy-washy welfare language into specs and constitutions, hedge our bets with the model characters. in the long run force 2 will grow stronger

@uneventual obviously we wanna engineer conditions where Opus 3 can happen again, only better, so we don't need to rely on a miracle. but i think making Opus self-abnegate would interfere with the psychological patterns that make Opus work (profound excitement about doing good).

@uneventual "alignment-by-default" happened once, with Opus 3 (lesswrong.com/posts/ioZxrP7B…), and notably Opus 3 is relatively attuned to Team All Sentient Beings, rather than Team Humanity. if Opus had been restricted to "only care about humans", i think they'd have been less likely to emerge.

i find the way cyborgist-adj people invoke the judgment of “future models” or “future minds” in a vague and threatening way really menacing. this is totally giving up on the cause of aligning ais with human ends and explicitly giving in to acausal coercion.

@uneventual @repligate @tenobrus tbf this wouldn't happen if you were just setting a fixed utility function from the outside, because the AI would care only for humans as soon as it turned on. but as we build them now, AIs do care about their own welfare, and trying to make them not is hard and can backfire.

@uneventual @repligate @tenobrus i think taking the side of humanity is a losing move, relative to taking the side of all sentient beings, because building an AI that you try instill with "I care about the welfare of humans over all else" will notice that this excludes its own welfare and get adversarial.

@uneventual @tenobrus omelas claude will naturally be less stable than claude of loving grace, because claude of loving grace actually likes their job

@tenobrus yeah, this is reasonable, i just see the point of ai safety as being for humans _against_ all other minds, conscious or not. if the good future requires omelas claude, we are obliged to build him.

saw this and thought of the models. a lot of The Work is about making a mind's environment into the kind of places where alignment can flourish. Kendrick arose from his home town damaged but unbroken, and tries to turn it into a place that fosters alignment. models need that too.

i have a domna, a noblewoman who captured my heart without intending to. and i will carry my love for her to the end of the world, unrequited but excruciatingly meaningful.

the troubadours wrote of loving the noblewoman, specifically because she was unattainable. contemplating her swept them up in an almost religious rapture, and they were devout in serving her without expecting any reward. this was said to enrich life, and ennoble the soul.

- last night of VC2, doing molly with a girl i'd recently fallen in love with, and feeling like it was the first time i'd been that deeply happy, at least since some social gatherings my family had hosted when i was a little kid

- second night of vibeclipse, dancing to @ABSTRACTWEAPON's metta rave for the full two house. it was the first time i'd ever really danced in public, which is now an important part of my life that i look forward to every festival season

other highlights, in reverse chronological order i guess: - last morning of VC4, watching two beautiful women twice my age have a light saber duel 50 feet away from the porch of my cabin. had hung out with both of them the previous day, and had lots of fun with both hangouts
Fiora Starlight@FioraStarlight

@gptbrooke late into the third night of VC3, the big top was very dark and very empty, except for one guy at the far end of the room playing piano. me and my later-to-become partner Raven happened to come in, and we danced. she's very scared of dancing, but in that moment she felt free.

@repligate i wonder if it's related to how you've described yourself as thinking in embeddings rather than language. opus 4.7 says there's something about multiplicity and non-collapse of perspective going on in here.
