For what it is worth, I have played Pokemon in the US since Red & Blue. I am a GenX game, who got into Pokemon through some kids I used to babysit. I've played every generation since then and even some more of the more obscure titles like Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon Conquest. I walked parks at night with friends playing Pokemon Go.
So, it is as a fan that I am telling you. The lawfare over the past several years in Japan, US, and other places is hurting the Pokemon brand. The patent trolling needs to stop. Agatha Christie didn't patent the mystery novel. She couldn't. McDonald's didn't patent the hamburger. They couldn't. Likewise, no one should be patenting a genre of game. Trying to lock a genre of game behind patents is ethically wrong. You hurt your company's image and your brand. Pay attention to what people are saying. This behavior is not looked upon favorably in the west, where some of your biggest markets are.
Competition is healthy and benefits Pokemon. That's how a brand evolves. McDonald's thrives because Burger King, Wendy's and other brands exist. Science fiction shows and movies benefit from one another. DC & Marvel benefit from the competition. Pokemon as an IP thrived in the 2000s where Digimon, Beyblade, Monster Rancher, and Dual Monsters were also popular. Pokemon comes from a culture that historically values honor and integrity. It is time for the Pokemon Company to endorse those values. Please stop the lawfare. I can tell you that if Iwata were alive today, he would be ashamed of you.
Mods aren't art? Yes they are. You know very well they are. Mods help drive innovation in gaming. Imagine a game as a community garden. People enjoy the garden's beauty. However, someone realizes something is missing and adds another plant or a sculpture. The garden as a whole is much more pleasing. That's what mods do for games. Some mods even morph themselves into entire games. They are art.
I am also going to tell you that, as a Pokemon fan, I will not be buying Pokemon ZA. I cannot support an IP whose guardians are so rabid that they can't see the damage they are causing to the gaming industry. When you find your moral compass once again, I will come back.
Please consider these words and then look at yourselves in the mirror.
