@AmericanAir Your definition of "beyond our control" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Weather cancellation last night? Fine. ATC this morning? Maybe. Refusing to comp lounge access on my layover so I can take the meetings you're about to make me miss? Not one of those things.

Sometimes, due to circumstances beyond our control, our level best isn't very good. Sometimes, the best thing you can say is, "I'm trying." It's easy to be ashamed of yourself when that happens. To say, "Man, I should be doing better. I'm capable of more. What is wrong with me." When things are so hard that even getting out of bed is hard, it's hard not to hate yourself when getting out of bed is all you do. The thing is, that's how life is sometimes. If you had broken your legs and were recovering and today, for the first time, you managed to get out of bed, you wouldn't be all like, "I suck, I should be running a frigging marathon." You know what's really insidious about that shit? It's that if the best you could do today was get out of bed and you beat yourself up over that, you're punishing yourself for winning. Seriously. Imagine if your coach or mentor or boss or parent responded to you do something that was very hard to do with, "You should be doing more." How likely are you to even try tomorrow? We are all our own worst bosses just as we're all our own worst employees. So, look, if today, the best you can say is, "I'm trying," — I'm having that kind of day — and if your best victory was the tiniest little thing, celebrate it anyway. Reply to this little speech with your victory if you want to. Because sometimes, that's the best you can do, but doing your best is always worthy of praise.

@Slit518 @mikemearls I agree, I don't know where people are coming across these interesting interpretations irl, because at the tables I've been at it’s been for things reminding people that attempting SA in TTRPGs actually isn't funny 🤷‍♀️

@mikemearls I may be wrong, but I feel like "safe game" may refer to the idea of being able to throw up an X or card when a situation or scene doesn't sit well with one of the players to move past it. Or where a person can game without being mistreated due to sex, race, creed, etc.

Because I'm at Gary Con and feeling salty - I think the idea that younger gamers want a "safe" game - whatever that means - is utterly wrong. Participation trophies are there to make the parents feel good about themselves. The kids know it's a show.
