@FitMarshmellow Superman is like sonic the hedgehog…. in the sense that he’s a very straightforward easy to graft character that kind of breaks people’s brains. depth & complexity are right there, but for some reason, it doesn’t register because 9/10 dude has a smile on his face.

Goodbye Godzilla fans, Hey guys, I just wanted to thank you all for the great memories that we’ve shared during my time in this fandom. Unfortunately, I lost my virginity and therefore I am no longer qualified to be a Godzilla fan. I’ll miss this community and its art greatly.

Im crowd sourcing some info, please don't google anything for this, off the top of your head, what is the earliest game you remember having achievements/trophies? preferably looking for things predating the modern steam/xbox 360/ps3 wave of achievements

explaining to a child why they do not have cows at the zoo. “cows arent really an exciting animal”. well, this isnt true for her. many people probably would be excited if the zoo had cows. perhaps we have all been misled

I remember the exact first time I saw this image on Facebook in 2014. Where I was and everything. I thought it was almost unbearably strange. But now it's just another picture, and I never see anything that gives me that feeling anymore

i know so many parents whose kids watch Frozen or some other movie literally every day, for months at a time feels like this was not a thing among kids in the 90s obviously pressing 'play' is so easy, but rewinding a VCR isn't hard either what explains?

@lymanstoneky I will add that python is probably on of the better languages to teach. It enforces readable styling and is among the easier languages to learn. And moving to a new language is easier then picking up your first. So yeh probably the two worst examples.

i strongly suspect in 15 years computer skills actually will still include microsoft excel, but probably not python. i believe excel will still exist because the graphical user interface approach to tables has been in continuous use since 4,000 BC.
Ben Podgursky@bpodgursky

I hear some parents of young kids justify electronics with "oh my kid needs to learn computer skills to get a job" and it's so ridiculous. I have literally no idea what "computer skills" will look like in 15 years but I can tell you it's not using microsoft excel and python.

this is true. the reason Blockbuster failed was not that they were too stupid or slow to change, it is that the business had been looted by its parent Viacom in precisely the same way private equity does to everything nowadays. Blockbuster had a good approach to a changing marketplace and a good lead with their huge brand name but they had absolutely no capital to make their plan work because all their cashflow was pledged to pay extremely high debt levels, all of which debt was extracted by Viacom prior to spinning Blockbuster off to flounder and die on its own, rather that providing working capital for the on-going Blockbuster business. one of the last Blockbuster CFOs has an illuminating appearance in the documentary The Last Blockbuster explaining this. the existence of this wildly profitable enterprise well-positioned for success as the market evolved was effectively ended by its ownership looting it to take all value out immediately. this has become the story of huge swathes of our economy now due to the rise of PE.
Jeremy Horpedahl 🥚📉@jmhorp

What's even crazier is that for a brief moment, Blockbuster -- yes, the old giant rental store -- seemed to have it figured out. They had DVD by mail, which you could return to a local store for another DVD the same day, all bundled with an emerging streaming catalog

@ClaireMax I have a random riding jacket that I got to go ice skating in. It felt like a lesser version of this description. I would say it’s still worth it to try and get a cool coat to replicate.

@tlbtlbtlb @kareem_carr I mean the discredited uk doctor that contributed heavily to it was actually just trying to get people to take 3 shots instead of 1 shot for 3 vaccines because he had financial interests tied to it. But it kinda grew out of control from there.

@kareem_carr The claim was that a common preservative in vaccines containing mercury causes autism. Which isn't wildly implausible. Elemental mercury in young people causes various brain development problems. However, consensus is that this particular mercury compound is metabolized safely.

Vaccine skepticism makes no sense to me because vaccines are such a simple concept. You expose people to a small, harmless piece of a pathogen so they build an immune response to the real thing. Also, why would any of that lead to autism?

Theres a very long list of US products that cannot be sold in the EU thanks to EU regulations. Since the favorite pastime of the Trump regime and every US oligarch is now to demonize EU regulations, I thought it would be very much worth going through some of those products.🧵
