In London this past weekend, I spent time at a Ukrainian school and visited their classrooms - it was an experience I will not soon forget. A little girl showed me her class teddy bear, Sofia, the one she got to take home for the week. She told me she sang to her, and then, in a voice as clear and bright as a bell, she sang Shchedryk. It was so pure, so innocent. And yet it carried the weight of everything she was forced to leave behind. They spoke of fleeing Russia’s invasion with their families, of what they saw and what they’ve lost. Their scars are not visible, but they are deep, and they will shape them for the rest of their lives. And I watched all the children stand together. They recited the poetry of Ukraine and sang their national anthem with a proud, unwavering strength that filled the room. Listening to them, it becomes unmistakably clear: Russia’s war was never about territory. It is about the eradication of all that is Ukraine, and what it means to be Ukrainian. On the walls hung a beautiful tapestry of paintings created by these young boys and girls. They were not drawings of war or politics, but of what every child longs for: a warm home, peaceful days, laughter with family, and a life untouched by fear. In every image, you could see what has been taken from them. And yet, despite everything, they forge on - grateful for opportunities in England and working to integrate in a new land but preserving their language, their culture, and their identity so they may one day return home. And in that, there is both heartbreak and something unbreakable.
