Imagine standing guard over the world’s most sacred sites, only to be constantly attacked for it. Israel is responsible for protecting Jerusalem’s Old City, which holds the holiest places for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and Al-Aqsa Mosque all sit side by side. When Jerusalem was under Jordanian rule, the Jordanians desecrated and destroyed holy sites and prevented worship. But since 1967, when Israel liberated the city, Israel has kept these sites open and safe for people of all faiths, something that was not the case under Muslim rule beforehand. Yet it faces constant pressure. Extremists often launch attacks from the holy sites themselves. Stones and fireworks fly toward Jewish worshippers at the Western Wall. Terror groups use the area to incite violence and target the city with rockets. When Israel takes necessary steps to secure the area and prevent bloodshed, many in Europe, Canada, and beyond quickly condemn it. They criticize security measures without acknowledging the real threats. This puts Israel in an impossible position. It must protect these fragile treasures around the clock while under fire, both literally and politically. If it acts, it is condemned. If it does not, it is condemned and the sites and people suffer. The international community should learn to just STFU and recognize this difficult reality instead of constantly pointing the finger at the only one trying to keep the peace. Israel is always forced to play by different rules by an international community hellbent on seeing its destruction. And it’s enough already.

Poland’s new conservative president Karol Nawrocki speaking clearly about what Russia really is at @CPAC in Dallas: “In Europe today, we face an aggressive Russia. A regime that invades its neighbors, a regime that destroys cities, a regime that believes power gives it the right to dominate others. The same regime is trying to tell the world: 'We are the defenders of traditional values.' That is a lie. Russia is not defending conservatism. Russia represents corruption and violence."

@CalypsoKid74 @redarrowhead @dollymad1812 @Isaac_Herzog I’m Catholic. I have Jewish family including grandchildren in Jerusalem. I go there often. I know of which I speak. U have never even visited Israel and vomit out stereotypical blather. Just sit down and try to educate yourself.

I just called the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to express my great sorrow over this morning's unfortunate incident in the Old City of Jerusalem, in which Cardinal Pizzaballa and the Custos of the Holy Land, the Most Reverend Fr. Francesco Ielpo, were prevented from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for prayers amid the ongoing security situation. I clarified that the incident stemmed from security concerns due to the continuous threat of missile attacks from the Iranian terror regime against the civilian population in Israel, following previous incidents in which Iranian missiles fell in the area of the Old City of Jerusalem in recent days. I reaffirmed the State of Israel's unwavering commitment to freedom of religion for all faiths and to upholding the status quo at the holy sites of Jerusalem.

@Ltrs_Frm_Across @JackPosobiec U obviously are not familiar with the geography, politics or logistics of the Holy Sepulchre or Old City in general.

@JackPosobiec This is very positive but more is needed. Whether Christian religious services take place or not in the birthplace of the religion should not be the decision of Muslims or Jews.

@Steve3449 @emilykschrader @MarkJCarney It was a surprise to everyone that he hid what they do every year? Don’t you mean Simeon in authority should have spoken to him about how to safely practice their religion?

I am disappointed with the decision by the Israeli police to prevent the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Christian Communities of the Holy Land from marking Palm Sunday at the Holy Sepulchre.    These actions further violate the longstanding status quo of Jerusalem’s Holy Sites. People of every faith in Jerusalem should be able to worship freely, fully, and without fear. I am pleased that President Herzog has contacted the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to reaffirm this.

@sfrantzman @BarakRavid U think the PM’s office or the local security can read the Cardinal’s mind about his intention to visit?

@sfrantzman @BarakRavid Come on Seth. U know that the Cardinal knew everything was closed. Was the family with the key even there? U live there. My family is in Jerusalem and I visit often. The Old City is dead except for residents and security. What did the Cardinal expect? These are not normal times.

@sfrantzman @BarakRavid If only the Cardinal had contacted the PM’s office in advance instead of unannounced drop in.

@BarakRavid Couldn't a phone call earlier today have solved all this, told the police to just let him through? A whole day of controversy for no reason. And meanwhile the whole reply-factory talking point crowd had to be deployed with all sorts of excuses and incitement.
