The documentary filmmaker @KenBurns says the American Revolution was the most important event since the birth of Christ. I spoke with him at @aspenideas about the moment, 250 years ago, that launched America's democratic experiment. Part 1 of our conversation:

Instead of pining for the past or lamenting politics today, I used my July 4th column to look at what’s to come - and how we can continue to self-correct 🇺🇸🇺🇸 politico.com/news/magazine/…

America at 250 is a paradox. The best of times, the most stress of times. But when you compare us at 250 to earlier anniversaries, the same portrait emerges: a nation forever striving, innovating & worrying. Everything has changed & nothing has changed. brucemehlman.substack.com/p/six-chart-su…

There was no guarantee the American experiment would survive. From the start, the country distinguished itself by embracing risk-takers willing to challenge convention. That appetite for building became our competitive advantage. 🇺🇸fortune.com/2026/06/24/ste…

New newsletter: AMERICA, 1926. WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE 100 YEARS AGO ON AMERICA’s 150th BDAY Hands down, the most fun I had writing a historical essay this year. I went through a widely forgotten, chart-filled 1,500 page report on life in the 1920s commissioned by Hoover just before the depression, to paint a picture of how much and how little has changed in the last century. Feat.: - the booming auto and radio industries - the rise of early female empowerment and decline of child labor - familiar fears of technological disemployment alongside unprecedented growth - rapid urbanization, horrific agrarian deflation, and the demise of America’s farming identity - manufacturing is booming but nothing is growing faster than wholesale transportation and retail sales jobs - a golden age for print - familiar anxieties about declining birthrates and too much immigration - and half the country still has no electricity or indoor plumbing … all illustrated with gorgeous 100-year old graphs on yellowed paper. open.substack.com/pub/derekthomp…

July 3, 1776 — With independence approved, Congress turned to Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, spending nearly the entire day revising the document line by line.

Predicting how things will change decades from now is a daunting task. Thomas O’Toole, The Post’s science editor at the time, attempted to do just that for America’s bicentennial in July 1976. Here's what he got right — and wrong about 2026. wapo.st/4v4jkxv

A near constant refrain you’ve heard from me over the years is that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. America became the world's leading economy by giving entrepreneurs room to take risks and build. When I imagine the next wave of technological progress—in manufacturing, healthcare, food, energy, and more foundational sectors—I imagine it will begin where the problems are most pronounced and the will to do something about them is the greatest. fortune.com/2026/06/24/ste…

"Our country did not become the world’s leading economy by luck," @SteveCase writes in a new commentary piece for Fortune. "We created an environment where entrepreneurs could flourish and where people with bold ideas could create value, generate jobs, spur innovation, and strengthen communities." bit.ly/4uSkLPq

As I write in @FortuneMagazine, our next century of success will depend on whether entrepreneurs everywhere have the chance to contribute. If the last 250 years are any indicator, renewal comes from people willing to build something new. I believe in us. fortune.com/2026/06/24/ste…
