Me: I'll have what she's having My wife: You're not allowed to make that reference if you haven't seen the movie Me: I think I get a pass because i've been to Katz's.

A lovely night having @SteveSadin over for our @RuleZeroLondon Pokémon quiz. Never underestimate how restorative it can be having a drink with an old friend (especially after bombarding a room of 50 or so people with weird questions about Pokémon).

@benbhayes @SamuelHBlack And to be explicit, I think these distinctions + this thread is great. Just think it’s better associated with jobs to be done/specific needs vs overall categorization of individuals

@benbhayes @SamuelHBlack I’m with Ben. There are different jobs to be done for individuals. The same person can be a hyper competitive heavy gamer who is top .01% in the world at some games (and that may even be their profession), and also be super into roulette as a diversion.

I think the discourse around casual/social players and competitive players would benefit from considering a framing I haven’t seen discussed. It’s what I’ll call light gamers vs heavy gamers. 🧵

@nabeel I think that for open economy game models (and the values of the individual digital or physical collectibles associated with it) to sustain over time: collector demand needs to be driven primarily by love, not speculation.

There are other examples of merging collectors & players in a single game - Pokemon TCG has for 20+ years managed a base of collectors chasing shiny charizards while keeping a competitive scene. But it certainly requires a nuanced understanding of your game & it’s economy.
