The PLA literally used donkeys to carry their supplies because the Vietnamese roads were too treacherous for wheeled vehicles. No one hear is wearing body armor and their helmets are literally WWII era vintage. The PLA was like a WWII era army even just 40 years ago.

The PAVN was actually better equipped than the PLA that went to war against Vietnam in '79. Some of the PLA units even used old, obsolete ammunition from the Korean War that would jam up their rifles or RPG rounds that wouldn't go off. In order to not escalate the conflict, the PLA didn't even deploy air assets to support their ground troops. The Chinese air force never even flew sorties over Vietnam....

The French education system produces generalists with brutally strong hard science foundations (maths, physics, engineering) who can drop into any new field and rebuild it from first principles.
