Ukraine's counter-terrorism unit raided a warehouse in Vinnytsia expecting to find a crypto mining operation. They found 3,800 PlayStation 4 consoles stacked on industrial racks from floor to ceiling, every one of them running FIFA 21 on autopilot. The consoles were farming Ultimate Team coins 24 hours a day to sell on the black market. PCs controlled bots on each PlayStation. The operation was stealing $259,000 a month in electricity from the city's power grid and causing blackouts across Vinnytsia. Residents lost power so a warehouse could play automated soccer around the clock. The hardware alone was a $1.5 million investment. At black market rates, 3,800 consoles farming coins nonstop could generate $3 to $5 million a year. Here's why the math worked. EA generated $1.62 billion from Ultimate Team in fiscal year 2021. That's $3,000 per minute. Rare player cards are nearly impossible to get through normal gameplay. You either spend hundreds on randomized packs or you buy coins from someone who farmed them. That gap between what players want and what the game actually gives them created a black market worth over $200 million a year. A leaked EA internal presentation said loot box purchasing was the "cornerstone" of FIFA and that the company was doing everything it could to drive players toward buying packs. The whole system was designed to make grinding feel impossible and spending feel necessary. Four months before the Ukraine raid, an EA employee got caught selling rare Icon cards directly to players for $750 to $2,500 per package using internal developer tools. EA confirmed "questionable activity" and opened an investigation. The company that built the virtual economy so profitable it justified an industrial-scale bot farm in Eastern Europe had employees exploiting the same economy on the side. EA has spent years fighting coin sellers. They removed direct trading, added price ranges, pursued legal action. Every countermeasure made the remaining supply scarcer, which made the black market more profitable, which made a warehouse full of 3,800 PlayStations more rational. The Ukrainian government called this the largest underground crypto farm their law enforcement had ever discovered. Every console had a FIFA disc sticking out of it.
