They did not clear a village on the Isle of Rum. They cleared the island. All of it. In one go. Think about what an island is. It is not just a place people happen to live. It is a closed world with its own graveyard, its own names for every rock and pool and hollow, its own way of speaking, its own memory. When you empty an island you do not just displace families. You end a world. Every place name that only those people knew, every song only they sang, every story that only made sense if you were standing in the right glen, gone in a single summer. And the descendants of those three hundred are scattered across Canada and beyond right now, many of them with no idea that their family once belonged to a specific green strath under a volcanic ridge in the Inner Hebrides, a place they could walk today and not recognise. Rum is beautiful now. Empty and wild and protected. Tourists photograph it and call it unspoiled. It is not unspoiled. It is bereaved.
