@andrewyuanlee @davidchalmers42 As a semantic proposal, I think something less committal is more plausible: ‘is conscious of X’ means ‘is aware of X in a certain way’

@davidchalmers42 Yeah, I'm open to this. But do you have any counterexamples from ordinary use? (Here's one possible counterexample that @StoljarD brought up: 'Universities are more conscious of diversity these days'. Still, this sounds like loose talk in my ears).

I've been thinking about the relationship between the following expressions: 'conscious of', 'aware of', and 'phenomenally conscious'. Hypothesis: To be conscious of x *just means* to be aware of x and for that state of awareness to be phenomenally conscious. Is this plausible?

@xphilosopher @ax_phi @NeuroYogacara @keithfrankish Well, if pc is defined (as it usually is) using natural language phrases like ‘what it’s like’ or ‘how it feels’ then empirical facts about what people mean when they use these phrases is absolutely relevant, esp to how to understand the definition.

@ax_phi @NeuroYogacara @keithfrankish I would love to create more helpful dialogue with other philosophers of mind about this issue! For example, @StoljarD, do you think that empirical facts about what people ordinarily think are relevant to claims about the "phenomenological obviousness" of conscious experience?
