India imports nearly 70% of AC and refrigerator compressors, mostly from China. These already attract 7.5% import duty. If boosting local manufacturing is the goal. Why not simply raise the duty to 50% or even 100%?

The richest guy in my colony drives a Maruti. But one of my neighbour drives a BMW. Seven EMIs deep. The Maruti owner has 5 crore in equities. The BMW owner has 40 lakh in PF and a credit card balance. In India, the car is the loudest signal. And the most misleading one. Unspent money in the bank is the truest metric of wealth. Debt is what you park in the driveway.
