There’s a lot of Europe bashing on twitter these days, but it’s temporary Not because Europe will get better, but because soon, Europe being poorer will be as obvious as Africa being poorer, and making fun of it of equally bad taste

before this, i basically had a mental model that US and EU were functionally identical living standards this was years ago, and it seems like it's becoming even less true over time

how old were your parents when they had you/your siblings? my mom was 37, which especially for the era was considered Fairly Old.

If your code spends 5% of its time in function X, optimizing X can only speed up your program by 5% at most But this heuristic (Amdahl's law) applies to team processes, sales funnels, everything Learning to focus on the high-leverage points is a mark of career maturity

@rshakoor12 Or will start optimizing before profiling at all! The number of times I have started profiling and the actual bottleneck is in a place I would have never expected is... > 50% of times probably -- if it was obvious, you probably wouldn't have coded it slow in the first place

the worst part of developing stateful services is sometimes fixing a bug might break someone downstream of you if they had worked around your bug

@adastroworld I think a lot of it is really knowing what you're about After being happily married for years now, I know *exactly* what matters to me, what doesn't matter, what I need, etc. And I could dial in on that really, really quickly in another person.
