"With this historic safety net set to greatly increase the profits for sugar producers, it is a perfect time to move to an alternative future where growers, producers, and impacted communities all benefit from a prosperous sugar growing economy. A win-win-win for the Glades."

“How does one man’s right to burn allow him to trash hundreds if not thousands of people’s property worth millions of dollars? That is one unanswered question that I have a right to know.” insideclimatenews.org/news/10032025/…

While the UN is helping sugar growers in developing nations like Egypt shift away sugarcane burning sugar growers here in Florida continue the toxic outdated & unnecessary practice. With a new harvesting season begun its way past time for Big Sugar to #StopTheBurn #GoGreenHarvest
United Nations Egypt@UNEgypt

Promoting circular business opportunities and addressing harmful misconceptions about burning sugarcane waste helps pave the way for innovative business practices by raising awareness of the value of waste and by-products. This is one of the objectives of the "Inclusive Green Growth in Egypt" project, implemented by the @UN in Egypt in partnership with the Ministries of Industry and Environment, funded by the Swiss government. This initiative seeks to transform the sugarcane value chain in Luxor and Qena by enhancing circular business opportunities and tackling harmful misconceptions about burning sugarcane waste, while also raising awareness of the health, environmental, and economic risks involved. Through tailored capacity building along the value chain and providing advisory support to micro, small, and medium enterprises, NGOs, and financial institutions, along with essential links and guidance for the local government, the project has resulted in the production of alternative fertilizers and feed products. This not only benefits local farmers and companies but also contributes positively to our environment 🌍! 📊 Key Achievements: - Over 1,200 market actors were educated on circular business opportunities. - More than 45,000 tons of sugarcane waste were valorized from 2022 to 2024. Together, we can create a greener and more sustainable future! #UNDay #Together_for_our_Common_Future

This long-standing practice, which is no longer used by other major producers like Brazil, is a reminder that what's legal is not always just. Read more of this shocking piece from @sierramagazine at the🔗 bit.ly/3Vvh7M0 ✍️ Cynthia Barnett 📸 Rose Marie Cromwell

“I thought it was really interesting that seeing something like that is very common for people who live in Pahokee, and very common to see from the high school. Nobody points it out when it happens. But I realized if that were to happen to somebody from a more affluent community, it would be really shocking.” –Madison Jones, Pahokee, FL resident sierraclub.org/sierra/2024-2-… @StopSugarBurn

“But our success has been in raising public awareness of sugarcane burning and its negative impacts. When we started there was minimal awareness outside of the impacted areas. Now it’s a national issue with national attention.” #StopTheBurn #GoGreen theguardian.com/us-news/2024/j…
