That's not a good comparison at all. Turn Based combat is the soul of this series. The only games without it right now are literally spin offs from the main line of games.
What you are talking about is evolutions of graphics and hardware. Open world is a thing because the hardware now allows it.
The games could've always been action based dand not turn based but they have not. This isn't Final Fantasy, you dont play as the pokemon, so action based does not make any sense at all.
