The behaviour of Minister Ben Gvir toward the Global Smud flotilla activists is deeply disturbing and unacceptable. Malta adds its voice to the international condemnation of his actions, which were also denounced by his own colleagues in the Israeli government. Such actions are inconsistent with democratic norms and fundamental values of human dignity. We demand the release of citizens and their treatment in a manner consistent with international standards.

Together with the liberal Mayor of Ghent, Mathias De Clercq, and Josja’s father, we are calling on you and @prevotmaxime to take immediate action. As Italy also speaks out with fury, @kajakallas must use the shifting balance in the Council and seize this momentum to make the EU act: sanctions against those responsible and the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The European Commission must stop hiding behind the Member States. It must tighten the trade pillar of the Association Agreement and increase political pressure.

All detainees must be treated with dignity and in full respect of human rights and international law, including maritime and humanitarian law. We remain deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and sustained, unhindered humanitarian aid must be allowed to enter. Diplomatic efforts must continue to restore the Gaza peace plan, ensure access for aid, and uphold international law and human dignity.
