Metabolic Mind
Metabolic Mind@Metabolic_Mind·
Are processed foods about to go the way of Big Tobacco? In the 1990s, Dr. David Kessler, then FDA Commissioner, took on the Tobacco industry, reshaping how America viewed cigarettes forever. Now, decades later, he’s set his sights on another target: the addictive refined sugars and starches at the core of ultra-processed foods. Kessler has filed a citizen’s petition urging the FDA to strip these ingredients of their “Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS)” status. How did these highly addictive and metabolically disruptive ingredients slip through in the first place? Shockingly, a 2022 study found that nearly 99% of food additives were never vetted by the FDA at all—they were rubber-stamped by the food industry itself. (Talk about the fox guarding the henhouse). With obesity, diabetes, fatty liver disease, and mental health conditions climbing, the question now is whether ultra-processed foods will finally face the kind of reckoning tobacco once did—or whether politics and industry will keep the status quo alive. We’ll be keeping a close watch as this story unfolds. .@KamalaHarris will be a president for all Americans. She actually cares about making your lives better. Donald Trump only thinks about himself. I want you to remember this: if someone doesn’t respect you, they should not represent you. That’s not what you need in your life. And we don’t need Donald Trump leading our country for another four years.

#ThroughHerEyes The murder of Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei at the hands of her boyfriend, got a single line on the news this morning. Let's make more of it here. Another beautiful and talented woman's life snuffed out by violence. #VAWG

It all started before a kick was taken. While Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin delivered his pre-shootout address to the whole Swiss squad, it was notable that Gareth Southgate gathered only the players who were on the pitch at the end of extra time. All the substitutes and those who had been substituted — even captain and usual penalty-taker Harry Kane — were on the touchline. No distractions, nothing superfluous. Southgate also made a point of speaking to a few players who didn’t take a penalty — Declan Rice, Luke Shaw, Kyle Walker and John Stones — the reason for which would become clear. It seemed as if England adopted a sort of ‘buddy system’, where one player would be assigned to one of the takers to support them and congratulate them after they had taken their kick — Walker with Cole Palmer, Shaw with Jude Bellingham, Stones with Saka, Rice with Ivan Toney. Trent Alexander-Arnold presumably had an assigned buddy, but that all got lost in the bundle of everyone celebrating. Their job would have been to commiserate if any of them had missed but, in the end, there was no need. 🔗 nyti.ms/4cxpNIS

A subtle England penalty shootout innovation (since 2021) is their deliberate, structured & functional use of social psychology. Here, Saka is picked up by John Stones after his penalty, to swiftly welcome him back in the team. What did England do and why did they do it? 1/7
