My reply to someone considering starting a video game company: The distribution of possible rewards for starting a video game company are generally not very good today. The market is well served, and gaining a foothold requires strong execution on both business and product issues, along with a substantial amount of luck. Plan to burn through seven figures with a not-great chance of making it back. If you do go for it, some bits of advice: Identify your customers clearly before you start. Not just a broad community, but specific people, and imagine them as you make decisions. Initially, build the smallest, most concise game you can imagine anyone paying for. It will still take much longer than you expect. Once something exists, hill-climb the value. Hopefully you will have some elements that clearly bring joy to people, which you can magnify. There will inevitably be tons of things that people find confusing, frustrating, or just boring that you will need to fix.

@IndieGameJoe @ID_AA_Carmack This is a great comment on excellent advice. I see too many folks working on their game in the dark when they have got some funding. Don't waste the money and time on making something that you have not validated with customers.

@ID_AA_Carmack brilliant advice. i'd add, once you know who your customers are, get your game in front of them as early as possible. demos, private tests, etc. their feedback will tell you if you're on the right track way before the reviews do. don't wait until release to find out

@HaktanSuren @kskrygan I care about being able to use it offline, as I travel a lot and network is not always fantastic. So hell yeah, I'd love that! I am just curious how you get the perf and cost right. But I am looking forward to being impressed!

Would you be interested if JetBrains releases a totally local AI agent, working 100% on your laptop, using our code insight engine and deeply integrated into the IDE? Yes, it will be probably 1 month behind the very recent frontier models, but no token blood bath anymore WDYT?

Game Pass Ultimate has become too expensive for too many players. Starting today, we’re dropping the price from $29.99 to $22.99/month. Future Call of Duty titles will no longer join Game Pass Ultimate on day one. They will join this tier the following holiday after launch (about a year later). Current Call of Duty titles will remain available to Ultimate subscribers. We’ll keep learning and evolving Game Pass to better match what matters to players. xbx.lv/4cWO9hR

@oldyzach Indeed! And making an official XCOM is my absolute gamedev dream. I would love to capture the atmosphere of the originals. While it had a comic-style intro, I think it wanted to be super realistic. And it was, at that time. I think it also helped that UFOs were the hot thing!

I can't decide which I want more 🤔 On the one hand, I dream that the new XCOM (sometime in the future?) would be dark, serious, and as realistic as possible - not colorful and comic style like the last two. On the other hand, I'd like it to be developed by a small studio as an indie game, retaining the atmosphere and visual style of the first two.

No single image of Starfield better illustrates how toothless, gutless, lacking in grit and texture than this one does. I made the mistake of visiting Neon late in my playthrough, excited about the idea of visiting a sleazy Cyberpunk planet. What I found was a clown show. There is something hollow and sad about the entirety of Starfield's worldbuilding and lore, that I can't even bring myself to be mad about - I'm just disappointed. This doesn't feel like a universe comprised of competing factions and people, it feels like a bunch of empty mannequins shooting at each other over nothing. Everything feels so dumbed down and family friendly. All the edges filed off to make everything palatable and bland. It's sad.

@MV_Raffa I always like to say: use whatever works for you. I am so sick of these "misuse" conversations. You should know the pros and cons, if you can. But even then, if you don't and it works, why not.

I really don't like it when people that teach others decide what "misusing" a system means - when there even is a method to do so. It's a great and fast way to get stuff done, I would ship games with it without a second thought (it's damn fast btw)
Ludonauta@LudensLudonauta

I just saw that Godot now has a method to access the first element of a Node group. This is likely because people misuse Godot's group system, using it as shortcut to access dependencies. But the Node Groups system is more like an ECS, that's why we have call_group()
