We are delighted to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Romeo Akachukwu, who joins the U’s on loan from Southampton for the remainder of the season. The 19-year-old arrives with an exciting pedigree at both club and international level. Romeo has represented the Republic of Ireland across multiple age groups, first catching the eye on the international stage as part of Ireland’s Under-17 European Championship squad, where he scored a stunning strike against Wales. He then went on to make 18 appearances for the Under-19s, captaining the side before making his Under-21 debut against England last November, marking another significant step in his international journey. Romeo signed for Southampton in August 2024 following a breakout spell with Waterford, where he made 35 senior appearances and famously scored a hat-trick in the League of Ireland play-offs. Since arriving on the south coast, he has continued his development with Saints’ Under-21s, registering seven goal contributions in just 11 Premier League 2 matches this season and was named on the bench for Southampton’s FA Cup tie with Doncaster. Romeo made his Saints first-team debut last season in the Carabao Cup against Cardiff City.
