Truly, no man is an island as the NICE* teams from Kenya and Rwanda came together for an enriching Peer Learning Exchange last week. 🌍 This five-day initiative was an opportunity to share lessons from three years of project implementation, fostering collaboration and driving innovation in food systems. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻? ✅ Exploring synergies between farmer hubs and cooperatives. ✅ Sharing insights on small grants initiatives and demand-generation activities across sectors. ✅ Revisiting progress of multi-sectoral food systems platforms with government collaboration. What moments stood out? 💡 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗶 (𝗗𝗮𝘆 2): The Kenyan team was inspired by Rwanda’s chick insurance and government-supported veterinary services, as observed from the Women’s Poultry Group (Rwimbogo Sector), which are transforming poultry farming in the sites. Demonstrated by Network Manager Berchard Mudacogora of the Nyakarenzo Demo Farm, the Kenyan team learned about innovative agricultural practices, composting initiatives and enhancing the cultivation of crops like passion fruit, spinach and amaranth. “We are grateful to NICE for organizing this initiative, which teaches farmers to grow vegetables and use quality organic fertilizers. We have started educating the community, encouraging households to grow vegetables and fruit trees. The positive results are already visible and we believe every household will soon have a vegetable garden and fruit trees, helping to combat malnutrition and stunting.” - 𝘈𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘕𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘢🌽 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘀 𝗥𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 (𝗗𝗮𝘆 3): The Kenyan team explored how Caritas spearheads a multi-stakeholder platform, ensuring sustainable food systems through local engagement and advocacy. “The NICE project aims to help residents of Rusizi access sufficient, nutritious and high-quality food. Throughout the project, we engage with the community and identify key stakeholders to improve food security. (…) The platform now includes stakeholders from agriculture, animal husbandry, food processing and distribution, working together to ensure a steady food supply, increase production, improve distribution and educate the community on using food for better health.” - 𝘏𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘝𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩, 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘨𝘶 𝘋𝘪𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘦 🔍 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗥𝘂𝗯𝗮𝘃𝘂 (𝗗𝗮𝘆 4): 𝘔𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳: A cooking demonstration showcased how mothers of malnourished children are transforming diets using local ingredients, achieving visible health improvements. 𝗠𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀’ 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁: A vibrant market, facilitated by NICE, where local farmers are able to reach consumers directly, offering affordable, nutritious products like eggs, fish, and vegetables. This Peer Learning Exchange was more than a learning experience—it was a celebration of collaboration and shared commitment to creating sustainable food systems. The dedication and creativity of the NICE teams are driving real impact for communities in Kenya and Rwanda. 💡 #UrbanNutrition #NiceNutrition #GoodAgriculturalPractices #FoodSystems @SwissTPH @ETH_en @SwissDevCoop

Building Bridges in Agroecology It was great to reconnect with the global colleagues of #NiceNutrition and learn from other similar initiatives at the Agroecology Science days in Switzerland earlier this month🇨🇭 Our workshop on local sourcing of healthy food in urban and peri-urban food systems explored how cities in Africa and Asia are harnessing the power of agroecology. Key highlights included enhancing community engagement, promoting gender-inclusive practices, and developing intersectorial collaborations. Main Takeaways: 🫱🏾‍🫲🏿 Supporting Enabling Environments: There is significant potential in existing agroecological initiatives, but they need better integration and multi-stakeholder collaboration. 📈 Market and Consumer Awareness: Enhancing consumer awareness and strengthening market infrastructure are crucial for promoting agroecology and supporting food diversity. 💡 Challenges and Solutions: A major challenge is promoting agroecological practices while increasing farmers' income yet without raising consumer prices, with community engagement and coordination being key solutions. 👩🏽‍🌾 Gender-Inclusive Impact: Activities that include women tend to have more significant impacts, enhancing both practices and dietary improvements. 💪🏾 Local Solutions and Institutional Support: Locally supported solutions, backed by community engagement and institutional coordination, are essential for overcoming challenges and implementing sustainable agroecological practices. #UrbanNutrition #CommunityEngagement #AgroecologicalPractices #FoodSystems #GenderInclusivity @ethzWFSC

Last week in @RusiziDistrict's Gashonga Sector, Kamurehe Cell, the #NiceNutrition project collaborated with Farmer Hub owner Ntaganzwa Aimable in conducting practical training on #agroecology and #GoodAgriculturalPractices for 30 smallholder farmers. 👩🏽‍🌾🧑🏾‍🌾 The training was carried out through "learning by doing" sessions, where farmers learned how to set up standardized #composting pits at the farm level. These trainings aim to raise awareness about recycling crop residues on the farm to produce rich and sufficient compost, which increases and protects #SoilHealth and fertility while also reducing farm input costs. 💰 Gashonga Sector agronomist Abel Bugingo reminded participants that using good compost ensures the sustainability of #agriculture. The participants appreciated the training and committed to establish compost pits on their farms to set an example for other #smallholder farmers in the community. 🌱 #UrbanNutrition #FoodSystems #NiceProject @ethzWFSC

The third round of cage fish farming activity started in @RusiziDistrict's City beginning of August, under the support of the SAL-NICE* project for the fishing cooperatives union "UCOOPEPORU". A total of 14,700 fingerlings were stocked in 2 cages, with an additional 2 cages to be stocked on September 1, 2024 to align with consumers' needs for continuous access to nutritious fish throughout the year. 🗓️🐟 To achieve this goal, 1 cage is reserved for grading, ensuring that from January 2025 onwards, 1 cage will be stocked every month to maintain continuous production without any pauses. ↻ #NiceNutrition #FishFarming #Smallholder #UrbanNutrition

Agroecology and composting 🌱 In @RusiziDistrict’s Nyakarenzo Sector, the #NICEnutrition Project and Farmer Hub’s Mukateganya Alvera trained 30 smallholder farmers on agroecology and composting. 👩🏽‍🌾🧑🏾‍🌾 The practical session taught them to create standardized composting pits, recycling crop residues to boost soil health. Nyakarenzo Sector agronomist Nsenga Mustapha Justin emphasized that good compost significantly improves both the quality and quantity of harvests.🌾 In @RubavuDistrict, a similar training at a Farmer's Hub demonstration farm focused on compost preparation for the next season. Sector agronomist Mr. Kavamahanga highlighted the need to address organic manure shortages, while NICE Project manager @Sttraton HABUMUGISHA praised the shift from waste to valuable resources. Participants in both locations valued the practical knowledge gained and anticipated reduced farm input costs. 💵 #Agroecology #GoodAgriculturalPractices #UrbanNutrition #FoodSystems @ethzWFSC #NiceProject

On #WorldBreastfeedingWeek, we need to ask: does every lactating mother have access to safe and welcoming breastfeeding spaces in all walks of her life? The answer will still be no. Progress has been made in all our countries but it is an undesirable reality that many people still think of breastfeeding as a private task that mothers should be doing in hiding, even at home. Support can come in various shapes and sizes - gentle encouragement, advise, offer of a space, counselling, policymaking, advocating or simply talking about it to people we know and creating awareness and understanding. By providing #BreastfeedingSupportForAll, we can create the right environment for healthier generations and happier women. #ClosingtheGap #WorldBreastfeedingWeek2024 #maternalhealth #breasfeeding #childhealth @sufiaa

What does it take to create nutrition interventions in urban contexts in LMIC? 🏘️ All #NiceNutrition initiatives are: 📝 co-designed with community members' insights and perceived obstacles to better diets 📈 promptly evaluated and adjusted to work Within a few weeks upon launching our Smart Food Tips initiatives we are seeing not only an increase in mothers asking to attend the interactive & fun sessions and cooking demonstrations, we are also observing increased adoption of those nutritious recipes at household level🥘 which is snowballing, and we are witnessing full commitment to and ownership of these initiatives by the local health centres and authorities. 🏥 Nutrition #BehaviorChange is possible, even in a short period of time, when the design and execution of initiatives is based on a deep understanding of the context in which they operate, when the behavioral changes we want to see are linked to what the target audience values the most, and their insights are fully embedded in the initiative.💡 The NICE project uses #BehavioralScience principles in the design and implementation of all its nutrition initiatives. Making access to nutritious food produced using agroecological practices, easier, more attractive, and popular can increase demand for better diets and creates a ripple effect in the communities. #UrbanNutrition #NutritionInitiatives #InvestInNutrition @SwissDevCoop @SightandLife @SwissTPH @ETH_en @ethzWFSC @SyngentaFDN

#HappeningToday 🗓️ @CorneliaSpeich presented a poster on the #NiceNutrition project at the Geneva Health Forum. #GHF2024 Here are some takeaways from today's sessions on Health and Environment: A Time for Solutions💡 We need to work interdisciplinary, e.g. with a OneHealth approach. This multisectoral approach must include CSO, authorities and science. @ProfJohnJi We cannot work in non-multisectoral platforms, but at the end it’s up to the governments to take up or not to take up. Things will not happen without technology, finance or social behavior. The moment to discuss is important, and prioritise. Co-creation is key – let’s co-create!
