On Sunday, an image of an Israeli soldier operating in Lebanon spread rapidly across social media.
It so perfectly encapsulated some of the worst tropes about Israel and Jews that many instinctively assumed it was an AI-generated product meant to slander the Jewish state. Friends of Israel who thought the photograph might be real prayed it wasn’t, so damaging was the picture.
Their prayers went unanswered. An IDF soldier had indeed taken a hammer to the face of a statue depicting Jesus in the Christian town of Debel in southern Lebanon. There was no AI, no manipulation, no getting around an image that points to a deep moral morass in the IDF and in broader Israeli society.

The Northern Command worked to coordinate the replacement of the statue from the moment it received the report of the incident. The IDF expresses deep regret over the incident, and is working to ensure that it does not happen again in the future.

@livlayne_ I don't condone attacking religious sites. However there are many Christians who would find that 3D Graven image sacrilegious. In fact most Christians follow the biblical commandment not to make 3D Graven images. 2D depictions are fine but lifelike 3Dcan bring out the iconoclasts

Obviously this is wrong. Every Israeli I know has also said this is wrong. It’s been condemned by the IDF, and the soldiers involved will be held accountable. That part isn’t complicated.
But I’m exhausted. I’m exhausted because for decades, Hezbollah and other Islamist actors in Lebanon have been responsible for attacks on churches, slaughtered Christians, and desecrated Christian symbols. I’ve never heard a Christian online express outrage over it.
If you only care about Christians when you can blame Jews, you don’t actually care about Christians.

This soldier's actions are disgusting. Period.
He deserves to be identified and punished, and the IDF already said they are investigating and will hold him accountable.
But let's not play these fake equivalence games.
One scumbag desecrating a statue of Jesus is NOT the same as Islamist terrorists who have spent 1,400 years slaughtering religious minorities, beheading people, and wiping out churches, temples, and synagogues across entire regions.
Equating the two does not make any sense. One is a crime. The other is a pattern of genocide in the name of religion.
