Shamera Fernando detonated a “homemade incendiary device” in the bathroom of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, seeking to cause “maximum damage” in the apparent terrorist attack. However, the explosion caused a small fire in the middle stall which self extinguished but caused $4600 to the cubicle. Fernando appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to charges including criminal damage, possessing items used to destroy or damage and drug charges. Prosecutor Alex Turner told the court Fernando was captured on CCTV attending the day prior to “scope out” the event, labelling it a “targeted attack” based on her protest ideology which is Pro Hamas.
