I’m not a Jim Penman fan but I do respect what he built. Jim put 5000 franchisees who want to “have a go” together and after being in business for as long as I have, that’s a miracle. But you can’t do in Australia today what Jim did. Which is exactly why you don’t see any serious competition at the scale of the current “Jim’s Empire” Australia regulated that out of existence over the last 40 years and created a near impossible economic environment for simple service business operators to go it alone. You never see the businesses that don’t start. There’s no ABS series for them. No press release. Just a quieter, poorer, more concentrated economy where the only players left are the ones big enough to afford a compliance department. Jim’s is too big to fail now. You are too small to start.
