Visited a premier Sydney golf club today. Was told I wouldn’t be able to play wearing black socks with black shoes and I needed to buy white club socks. Leaving this open for discussion, but I said out of principle, I’d prefer not to play than bow to archaic rules.

@DrJohnOrchard @eddiecowan @nathan_adcock22 That is the issue. They go hand in hand. CA have diminished the value in state cricket to a age/potential based competition. The flow on is nobody over the age of 22 is interested in playing grade cricket as they have no hope of anything higher.

@StuartClark6 @eddiecowan @nathan_adcock22 I think we're talking slightly different things: me on a way to get more people playing grade cricket, you on how to develop talent for the national Test team. Agree they're both important. Premier cricket admin difficult task to get the balance right

@DrJohnOrchard @eddiecowan @nathan_adcock22 So your basing your response on viewership and ticket sales numbers. Towing the party line evidence. Far better research would be ask a few ex players. The current mode removes the hope of achieving higher honours based on age

@StuartClark6 @eddiecowan @nathan_adcock22 Research = spectators, BBL 30000 per game 1 mil TV, 50 over & red ball domestic = hundreds. Playing may be different to watching but suspect many people find 3 hours an easier commit than 7 whether watching or playing. I find 9 holes of golf easier to get to than 18 same reason

@eddiecowan @nathan_adcock22 ...and in saying that, women's club cricket which is short-form biased is growing. Men's cricket here has the handicap of red ball "tradition" making amateur participation a big ask

@DrJohnOrchard @eddiecowan @nathan_adcock22 John, what research have you conducted to come to this conclusion? I would suggest little. The reason why no body older continues to play grade cricket is because once you are 22 years old under the current system you are considered to old.

@eddiecowan @nathan_adcock22 The big dilemma on grade cricket is whether to move backwards or forwards. If 50%+ of club cricket was T20 rather than red ball, much easier for older guys with a day job and family to commit to 4 hours of play per week than 1-2 days
