small update: I'll be joining @UWBusiness @UWMadison as an assistant professor of risk and insurance this Fall, graduating a year earlier than originally planned. I'm grateful for this opportunity and will do my best to produce something valuable :)

@jt_kerwin These are very nice! I even go as far as to take the outline off the top. As an audience member, I have only ever used that as a source of anxiety about the presenter's time management!

Your slides should avoid having tons of extra junk on them, but the default Beamer themes make that hard. So I made my own .sty file that fixes all the standard issues and put it on my website for everyone to use:

The problem was that the “conversation” was mostly about how much people hated paper straws. This high salience, low impact policy is the exact opposite of what we should have done. Instead replace grid generation with renewables. Nobody inconvenienced and huge impact.
Betsey Stevenson@BetseyStevenson

Plastic straws were picked because their consumption is visible (used most often in public) and so by targeting plastic straws, those concerned about plastic use could more effectively use peer pressure to both dissuade plastic use & start conversations about plastic.

@Jabaluck There is an updated version on Steam called "Two Point Hospital" that is functionally the same, with some added content (including the ability to adjust prices!)

@stuartcraig Until I saw the link I thought your post was a joke, like "of course, there is no video game for health economists." But, apparently there was.

The folks obsessively posting about egg prices for the past few years have gone strangely quiet just as egg prices hit an all-time high.

I hate Matlab. You take a gawdawful mess that uses repeat, permutedims, kron, ones, zeros, and who knows what else, and you ask an AI to translate it to Julia and you get a pretty little loop with broadcasting that is actually faster than this impossible to read vectorization.

@vini_singh_ that they do it best, but I'm being cheeky because my sense is that you meant "best" from the perspective of consumer benefit

Join my fantastic department - we're hiring in health economics & health policy! This is a tenure track assistant prof job. If you are going on the market with a PhD in economics, health policy, public health, or a related field, it's likely a great fit. 🔗aeaweb.org/joe/listing.ph…

@Jabaluck Also, it seems worthwhile to ask how we know if high prices provide an *efficient* level of innovation/quality. I'm aware of good papers showing that there *is* a gradient. But under cost sharing it's less obvious whether we're over/under-shooting those dynamic incentives

There is a tension between conventional public economics and the way that most people think about health policy: absent some other distortion, prices only matter for efficiency insofar as they impact quantities, and this impact is considerably muted by health insurance.
