I want to give the animators of #DragonBall the credit that they deserve. It is a collective effort. That's the project

The importance of directors in animation

------------------------------------------- Dragon Ball truly has an incredible impact! I am very happy and grateful for all the likes and follows I have received. I have not been able to thank each person individually, so please allow me to express my gratitude in this post. Thank you very much! I was just one fairly ordinary animator who had the opportunity to work on this series thanks to Shoji Kikuchi, the head of the company I belonged to at the time. Not only in Dragon Ball, but in anime in general, truly exceptional animators are only a small minority. Many works are brought to life by the contributions of numerous animators of average skill level, like myself. And while the work of animators tends to stand out the most, anime is truly created through the efforts of many staff members. Among all of them, I personally feel that the script and the direction greatly shape the overall impression of a work. However, episode directors tend to receive little recognition unless they have directed a work as the main director. Because I also have experience in production, I have seen firsthand that even when the animation staff is the same, the final film can turn out strikingly different depending on the quality of the direction. No matter how skilled the artists may be, if the script and direction are weak, the result can end with nothing more than: “The drawings are good.” And yet, it does not come with true emotional impact. On the other hand, even if the animation is average—or even below average—if the direction is strong, the viewer’s attention is drawn not to the drawings themselves, but to the work as a whole. And that, I believe, is where emotion is born. The same is true of manga. Of course, beautiful artwork is always a plus, but if the story, composition, and panel flow are not strong, it may be difficult to feel that it is truly compelling. Animation is a little like an orchestra. The scriptwriter is the composer, and the director is the conductor. And in each individual episode, the episode director takes on a role much like that of a conductor. However, as I mentioned earlier, episode directors are rarely given much recognition unless they have directed a work as the main director. Even people in positions at TV stations who approve storyboards are often unable to judge the quality of direction. That is how “invisible” the power of direction can be. That is precisely why I hope more attention will also be paid to the work of direction. I would like to introduce the script and direction for Dragon Ball Z Episode 299: Script: the late Sumio Uetake Storyboard / Episode Direction: Mitsuo Hashimoto Thank you very much for reading this long message.

Goku Super Sayan by Tadayoshi Yamamuro, correction is Miyahara's. The red tone used by Yamamuro in his Super Sayan is quite peculiar.

@Shiro_Mingi @ZherkaOfficial That's ok that's a personal opinion. I like many, I'm publishing a book with 67 of them this year. My favourite is Eguchi and still objectively I think Yamamuro was N1 even with Nakatsuru there

@Jwelou1989 @ZherkaOfficial Yeah that's right And he worked with toriyama himself in some manga, drawings for videogames, etc. But to me, all the good posters and drawings of the 90s I remember, all are Yamamuro. And he was different, fresh

@ZherkaOfficial @StudioKochab Nah, Toriyama himself said the one who matched his style best was Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. He said he would look at Nakatsuru drawings and think, "Wait, was this something I drew?" For example, left image is Nakatsuru's design for Bardock, right is Toriyama's redesign

@JGrsic He was the supervisor, and Yamamuro as chief supervisor Miyako is the person that writes the tweet so it comes from the source itself

This will be hard to explain and maybe understand (and not a diss either, just an observation), but Yamamuro made Goku look more like Piccolo (especially in the eyes) compared to the manga maybe because the eyes are more far apart and the shading kind of giving him a long/skinny face
