Weeks into filming, the director fired the original actor and asked Dano, who was only there for one scene, to take over the second biggest part in the film. He was 22. Two full weeks of footage had to be scrapped and reshot. The guy waiting for him on set was Daniel Day-Lewis, the only actor in history to win 3 Best Actor Oscars. His whole thing is refusing to break character even when cameras aren't rolling. In My Left Foot, he played a man who could only control his left foot and refused to leave his wheelchair the entire shoot. The crew had to carry him around set and spoon-feed him his meals. Gangs of New York was set in the 1860s. Day-Lewis refused to wear a warm coat or take modern medicine because his character wouldn't have had access to either. He caught pneumonia.
