Evangelicals bashing people is a problem. It is a problem to choose to be gay but a large part of that is a society-wide narrative and legal issue.
The solution is not to be puritanical but also not to be tolerant of it in the spaces which Christians have purview over.
It is like outwardly condemning pagans for their pagan practices, that isn't going to help them, but neither is tolerating that practice either. It's a fine line that has to be balanced.
Bible thumping is stupid. Tolerance is stupid.

The thing is, I'll take the billionth lecture about how me being attracted to other men will damn me to hell from a bible bashing nutjob on the right than allowing a group of infinitely more hateful jihadists behead me and throwing my body off a building for the same reason any day of the week.
One side wants to fear monger me into being straight, the other wants to kill me for being gay, obviously I'd prefer a side that doesn't hate me for who I am but given the two options, I choose the fear mongering over death.

I haven't seen what you are talking about before but I have seen Christians act high and mighty once or twice. Those ones don't follow God.

@GarrusVNBadger This sidesteps the fact that "too spicy" is a much lower threshhold for you than others. Being able to appreciate the flavors and sensations in that gauntlet of spices isn't for everyone, but it's very much for some.
