Last week I was doing an exit outbrief on a young client
135 lb, 16-year-old righty who’s been working hard to bump his velocity
Like everyone in our program, he’d sat through the full breakdown on nutrition
Meal planning, calorie tracking, all of it
I reminded him (and his mom) that, in our research, the biggest influencer of velocity isn’t mechanics, or mindset, or magic drills
It’s body weight
Up to around 180 lbs
His shoulders dropped
Mom gave him the “told you so” look
She said, “I try to get him to eat, but he’s just so picky,
and he always says he's not hungry.”
Here’s the thing: a big part of development is taking care of the easy stuff
Showing up on time is easy
Being prepared is easy
Putting food in your mouth is easy
Nobody cares how you feel
They care how you play
The hitters you’re facing?
They’re glad you don’t feel like eating
The kid taking the scholarship you want?
He’s glad you don’t feel like eating
Eating isn’t optional
It’s part of training
You don’t always feel like throwing
But you throw
You don’t always feel like lifting
But you lift
You don’t always feel like eating
Eat anyway

One project I made about a year ago was a food bucket list for Thailand. I used the @LeonardoAi software to create tons of images and compiled it into an Airtable gallery. Heading back to Bangkok tonight reviewing what to eat this week!
