I’m finally reading my thesis one more time before making it available online so anyone who wants to read it can do so. It’s entitled ‘Banal Utopia: urban gardening as a practice for materialising utopic city spaces’ I’m struck by how much more hope I have than before I started my doctoral studies. People who grow in cities carry out an act that is at once radical and ordinary. Transformative and banal. I’m so grateful for having been able to bear witness to, think with and participate in it.

@SunflowerPod1 Being biodiverse is how I garden - frogs & newts to eat snails/slugs, water source for pollinators to assist me, beautiful dragonflies to add interest. Seems illogical to me not to have some form of pond.

@SunflowerPod1 Concerns about mosquitos, kids falling in, mowing frogs. The bio-diversity lobby appears to have triumphed though, so we get small ponds if we desire now.

Listening to presentations on medieval and early modern food provisioning across Europe. Struck by London’s long history of being sustained by other parts of the world (info from Bruce Campbell) In 1638 - 25% of London’s population sustained by foreign grain.

@SunflowerPod1 Does your society/site/council allow small wildlife ponds on plots? Our local society is staging a SGM on Sunday to vote on this subject. There's quite a lot of resistance from members.
