@CathHodsman Lovely thank you. I'm also enjoying funding out what some of my garden visitors turn into later in spring and summer. So much to learn!

@manxscenes Funny you have those in winter. They are a summer visitor here and always nest close to the house so we see the babies fledge.

@katemacrae I am so, so sorry. This is devastating news. It's a horrible thing to happen. I lost my last girls with the same thing. Many thoughtless and careless dog owners about unfortunately.

Today, my beautiful speckledy hen, Celendine, & my gorgeous cockerel, Comfrey, were killed by 3 dogs who rampaged through my garden. So glad Teasel & Wren were indoors. I know them all individually & I’m traumatised and heartbroken. Please keep dogs under control around gardens.

Have you ever wondered why Horse Chestnut buds are so sticky? Well the story goes that the Fairy King caught a naughty gnome smearing glue where he shouldn’t, so forevermore he was tasked with painting the buds with his glue to protect them through the #winter! #FolkloreThursday

Brand new addition to @RuralRetreatFr 9 wezk old Bernese/Collie/Retrieve. Unwanted accident from neighbouring farm. She's lovely and settled in beautifully with our other household animals. She will be very loved here.

@Tree_Folklore Glorious colour indeed. Very pleased to have learned this. I have a 5 year old plantation of oak and now i know why they are so lovely over winter.

Young Oak trees hold onto their leaves through the Winter in a process called marcescence 🍂 This may help protect new leaf buds from the elements and help to retain moisture. Certainly by holding onto their leaves 🍂 into the new Spring trees, like this little one showing off to Aslan in East Belfast, help to retain nutrients in the Earth by dodging the wrath of the neat and tidy brigade who brush up everything in sight and prevent nutrients returning to the soil and depriving our smaller wildlife of food and habitat ❄️🍂

The difference 3 months made on this little fella. He’s been an awesome little buddy, and adopting him was one of the highlights of 2024 for me.

@katemacrae I have an agonising 2 further weeks before I can bring her home! Mum x bernese/collie and dad a rogue retriever x. Accidental pairing has made a delightful baby. Pups were unwanted on the farm so got to her just in time!

A single 400-year-old ancient oak produces 234,000 litres of oxygen a year while soaking up carbon dioxide, and can support more than 2,000 species of bird, insect, fungus, and lichen. Nature is amazing - we need more of it, not less. RT if you agree 🌳

@CathHodsman I've tried this too for the first time and also with leggy lavenders and all cuttings seem to have taken. Will do lots more in spring.
