I just completely reject that we are wealthier than we were 20 or 30 years ago in any way that matters. Whatever data seems to show that we are is very clearly not measuring what you want to measure. I don’t think burrito taxis matter. I think the phones have made us miserable. I don’t think the advancements in communication are important. I don’t care that the cars have more features. I don’t think any of this stuff matters like even a little bit. And I certainly wouldn’t trade my country for more of it. I think we long ago reached a level of comfort that’s sufficient. We aren’t hungry. We aren’t cold. We aren’t worked to death in fields. I wouldn’t trade my family for more stuff. I wouldn’t trade my country for more stuff. The people who see all this so-called material wealth and think that the opportunity costs are just too large to have children or that we need to give away the country to foreigners to keep the train rolling are in my view demented, deranged, lost. And their addiction to antidepressants and other mood-altering pills seems to confirm it.

@xwanyex I mostly agree, but improvements in cancer survival have been huge and those are nearly pure good. Especially children cancer survival.

The primary difference between the EU and the USA social welfare states is that the shockingly generous USA benefits are socially poverty coded. This hides the fact that they are in reality collectable well up into the 6 figures by large families.
Adam Geringer@GeringerAdam

Based on 2026 guidelines for a family of 15 (2 adults + 13 kids) with $100k income in Raleigh, NC: - SNAP: Likely eligible; est. $800-1,500. - Medicaid: qualify (adults <138% FPL, kids higher). - WIC: Eligible if pregnant or kids <5; ~$50/person/mo in food. - Section 8: Possibly eligible (<50% AMI ~$125k limit), $1k+/mo if approved.

I've had good luck so far with the solid brass and copper fixtures you can order from Morocco. If I ever build a house, it will be entirely free of American faucets, shower sets, etc.
Dago Supremacy@DagoSupremacy

Plumber told me if you need to replace a faucet, just go to the store and pick whatever one you like. It doesn’t matter, they’re all trash. Spend a little or spend a lot, just pick one you like that you’ll have for 5 years because they’re all junk no matter what. Liberating.

It’s hypothetically possible to undo the effects of both by the mid 21st century by building a massive missile defense satellite swarm and onshoring a complete robotic industrial ecosystem, but you then need to maintain a massive military edge over the rest of the world to be safe and that probably involves non-zero foreign entanglements

@xwanyex A related sports one I used to hear from Americans on professional soccer was disapproval of the way the players whine about fake injuries so the refs will issue a yellow / red card. It's direct opposition to our 'suck it up' sports culture

Part of what’s so pernicious about cultural change that occurs as a result of demographic change is not liberals hold to the following ethic: It’s probably racist even to notice that cultural change has occurred as the result of demographic change, but if you’re going to notice it, then you had goddamn better prefer it to what came before.
Wet-Tie Man@tie_wet

@xwanyex But you didn’t say you didn’t like the new norms around celebration. You specifically tied it to demographic change. So yeah, when you say certain undesired actions are cause by immutable racial traits, you’ll correctly be called a racist

As the British Fleet approached the Combined Fleet at Trafalgar, Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood (second in command) on his flagship The Royal Sovereign noticed a young lieutenant wearing boots. He recommended that the young man switch to silk stockings, as he had done, because they were much easier for a surgeon to manage if you were shot in the leg. -Age of Napoleon Podcast, Feb 28th, 2022

@DKThomp Interesting. Not sure I fully understand the categories. If someone has a child during the time series do they switch groups or is someone who became a father 13 years after graduating including in the man with children line for the full period?

A big new paper released this week on gender, parenthood, and income complicates some things I thought I knew about the economy The story I was familiar with from several years ago is that the gender wage gap had stopped narrowing and the economy continued to severely punish working moms. This paper finds: 1. The gender wage gap shrank by about 33 to 50% in the last two decades—although a male-female gap still very much exists. 2. Work from home has reduced the motherhood penalty, especially in "greedy work" careers with long hours 3. Data now shows that among workers with MBAs, dads earn the most and moms seem to out-earn men without children. (A parent premium! Pictured below) 4. Incomes are converging among men and women with advanced degrees, as researchers see dads working fewer hours and moms working longer hours

@SupSenAssoc The even funnier outcome is that the Mormons are the only ones who leave because their $100 billion can pile builds up to be large enough to afford a seed ship but small enough that no sovereign squishes their leaving voyage

You don’t need to travel to other solar systems until you hit Kardashev II, but as you approach it, it becomes economical to expand. Of course, this assumes you aren’t a stagnant unitary government more concerned about losing control than growth.
Sulla@gaulicsmith

Interstellar species will never be a united civilization. Transit time is too long. You COULD build a generation ship and send off to planets, but it will be slow and you might never know if they got there and how it worked. Getting any message takes four years ! Also, why colonize planets if you can build massive space habitats ?

@SupSenAssoc The logic of interstellar colonization would be inevitable for anything besides a unitary state. If Terra has 2 or more sovereign states, the state that invests a small sum in colonization has friendly “last strike” capability in case it loses a war in its home system.
