Now something for yumeshippers and simps ; sukuna, realistically speaking, probably wouldn’t be overly picky about looks. he doesn’t strike me as someone deeply invested in physical appearance, at least not in the conventional sense. that said, he is still capable of recognizing and appreciating beauty like any other human being ; he’s observant, almost artistic in the way he analyzes the world around him. if he were ever to take interest in someone, i don’t think it would come down to looks nearly as much as intellect. someone highly intelligent, curious, and just as fascinated by cursed techniques as he is would probably catch his attention far more. someone who can genuinely engage with him, challenge his mind, and indulge that same obsessive curiosity. does his partner need to be strong? not necessarily. i don’t think raw strength would be a requirement as much as independence would be. he likely wouldn’t care if someone wasn’t powerful so long as they didn’t expect him to act as their shield or protector. a bit of backbone, self-preservation, and personal agency would matter more. ultimately, i think sukuna avoids attachment by choice, not because he is incapable of it. he views attachment as something that makes people vulnerable and, in his eyes, weak. that seems to be the bigger reason he keeps others at a distance. but i don’t think that means he can’t form bonds ; only that he sees little value in doing so. he has clearly thought about concepts like love enough to come to his own conclusion that it’s ultimately worthless to him. so realistically, his partner could even be someone relatively ordinary ; not necessarily some overwhelmingly powerful sorcerer, but simply someone who exists comfortably within their own identity and can willingly match his intellectual interests and obsessive tendencies. + sukuna would likely avoid openly showing affection, not necessarily because he is incapable of it, but because allowing others to clearly identify what he values creates vulnerability. he would never want someone to think they could manipulate him through the person he favors or use that attachment as leverage against him. that said, if someone did manage to genuinely catch his interest, he would pay attention to them. not in an overbearing or possessive way, but with a quiet awareness. he would continue doing whatever he pleases, largely unaffected on the surface, though always somewhat conscious of where they are and what they are doing. not out of protectiveness, at least not in any soft or nurturing sense. if intervention became necessary, he might step in purely because losing something that interests him would be inconvenient or irritating. though if you ended up needing his help because of your own incompetence, he would absolutely make sure you never heard the end of it. being mocked or dismissed afterward feels far more in character than any gentle reassurance. i also don’t think he would suddenly treat someone with obvious warmth. outwardly, he’d behave much the same as he does with others, dry remarks, sarcasm, subtle provocation, the occasional comment meant to needle or stir a reaction out of you. the difference would be in restraint. there would be less genuine malice behind it, less intent to completely crush or discard. just enough to entertain himself and keep things from becoming dull. his version of interest would be subtle to anyone not paying close attention: less about affection in the traditional sense, and more about continued tolerance, attention, and the deliberate choice to keep someone around longer than he has any practical reason to.

something that bums me out about bsd’s english version (both by YP and by crunchyroll) is that they kinda just gave up on translating dazai’s really antiquated/“fancy” way of speaking. he was quite famously the wordsmith irl and i think it took away from his characterisation.
