Feeling grateful today writing back fourth-grade students from a school in Illinois who reached out to me as part of a class project about natural wonders. Some of them chose the aurora as their subject, and the teacher asked me if they could write to me as an "expert" in aurora chasing and photography. It was very fulfilling sending these out in the mail this morning...

Wow! How did you spend your morning? I watched my former student, Victor Glover, and his fellow astronauts launch into space. I watched on a huge TV onboard the Villa Vie Odyssey residential cruise ship where I live. Technology at its best! #artemisII #villavie #sharonlane

This is great: My amazing brother, @gralston, who knows a lot about AI and wants to use it to make life better for people, built a site to help people in every state get their birth certificates. You know why this is important; if you don't, you should.

I was just laid off by The Washington Post in the middle of a warzone. I have no words. I'm devastated.

Waking up without power, heat, or running water. (Again.) But the work here in Kyiv continues. Warming up in the car, writing in pencil — pen ink freezes — by headlamp. Despite how difficult this job can be, I am proud to be a foreign correspondent at The Washington Post.

On Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, The Washington Post laid off hundreds of journalists. We are devastated and raising funds to help them. Please, please share far and wide.

@SuperKatie2012 @_fat_ugly_rat_ Demographic changes. The far right had taken over the school board but got push back and lost some seats in November. Folks didn't want the school district to split.

Today, Russia struck a passenger train in the Kharkiv region with attack drones. In any country, a drone strike on a civilian train would be regarded in the same way – purely as an act of terrorism. There would be no doubt about the classification, neither in Europe, nor in America, nor in the Arab world, nor in China, nor anywhere else. There is, and can be, no military justification for killing civilians in a train carriage. In particular, over 200 people were on the train, and 18 were in the carriage hit by one of the Russian drones. Overall, this attack involving three drones has so far resulted in four confirmed deaths. My condolences to all the families and loved ones. Rescue teams are still searching for four more people, and two others have been injured.
Russia must be held accountable for what it is doing. And this means responsibility not only for strikes against our people, against our life, but for the very ability to carry out such attacks. The Russians have significantly increased their capacity to kill, their capacity to terrorize. They are investing in the progress of terror. And our task – and this should unite all decent people around the world – is to ensure progress in the protection of life. This is possible through pressure on Russia. This is possible by punishing Russia for its actions. This is possible through support for Ukraine. I thank everyone who does not remain silent when they see what Russian terrorists are doing.

[7:45PM SUNDAY UPDATE] Snow Falls Heavily At Times Through Midnight To 2am Before A Dry Slot Punches Through, With Freezing Drizzle Possible Before Dawn... More Periods Of Light To Moderate Snow For Monday... Blowing And Drifting Snow Tonight... Good evening everybody, thank you so much for all of your reports today, as of about 7:30pm most of us have between 9-18" of snow accumulation with more on the way through midnight or so before a dry slot punches through the region as the storm pulls east, passing south of Nantucket and out to sea as it continues to deepen.
We still have another 4-6 hours to go of snowfall rates either side of an inch per hour as the last part of the bulk of this winter storm works through our region.
I have noticed that some areas in northern Berkshires up into southern VT into southwest NH have had less snow than the rest of WMass, CMass and northern CT where stronger lift has generated more fluffy dendrites that stack up better, even if the total precipitation amounts are roughly similar.
Snowflakes in the form of plates, needles, and columns stack much flatter compared with dendrites (the big ornate snowflakes), and reports of those types of snowflakes have been reported.
We still have to get through Monday, which may generate some decent accumulations for the second part of the storm in those areas, so we all have to get through Monday night to tally up the final accumulations for this storm to see where the 12-20" widespread amount estimates land, along some of the 18-24"+ high terrain expectations.
After midnight, the drier air comes through, and then our heavy snow will shut off, which will leave us with some light snow showers, flurries, or freezing drizzle, so slippery conditions will continue overnight.
As I mentioned, we still have to get through periods of snow on Monday, which will produce the vast minority of snow accumulations from this system.
However, I do think by mid to late morning we'll get one pulse of more moderate snow showers Monday, then perhaps a lull, followed by a mid afternoon to early evening second pulse of steadier snow showers capable of additional light accumulation.
I will post a comprehensive update tomorrow morning, but in the meantime, please post your current snowfall totals by town below as we round the 8pm hour, and enjoy the rest of the storm if you're liking it and if you don't, just know that things will start to get lighter by tomorrow morning.
Have a great evening, Dave.
