One of the biggest mistakes I see with youth athletes is not a lack of protein. It's a lack of carbohydrates. I posted a pasta meal recently and had dozens of comments asking why I didn't use a higher-protein pasta. The answer is simple: I'm getting protein from the chicken. I'm using the pasta to fill the glycogen tank. Carbs are the primary fuel source for training. When athletes show up to a lift with a full glycogen tank, they move more weight, perform better, recover better, and ultimately eat more throughout the day because they're training harder. The problem is most athletes are trying to build muscle while under-fueling their workouts. If carbs are too low, the body starts pulling from protein for energy instead of using it to build muscle. That's the exact opposite of what athletes want. I recently worked with an 8th-grade lineman who stayed the exact same weight for 30 days, but his lifts went through the roof because we fixed his nutrition. If you want results this summer, don't just focus on the training plan. Focus on the fuel plan.
