This is one of the favorite escape hatches of the cannabis industry: lowering the evidentiary standard. Yes, observational studies can be useful for generating hypotheses and seeing real-world patterns. But they are also extremely vulnerable to placebo effects, self-selection bias, expectation bias, confounding variables, and financial conflicts. That’s exactly WHY modern medicine relies on randomized placebo-controlled trials in the first place. If cannabis advocates were confident in the strength of the evidence, they wouldn’t constantly try to sidestep the same rigorous standards actual medications are required to pass before being called safe and effective treatments.

Self-reported anecdotes are not the scientific standard for medicine. If they were, alcohol, crystals, and essential oils would all qualify too. That’s anecdote, not medical science. This is why placebo-controlled trials matter. Once a placebo is introduced, many of the claimed benefits of cannabis shrink or disappear.
Anthony Varrell@V_arrell

For those that say “cannabis is not medicine”. There are millions of people that will adamantly disagree with you. It might not be medicine for you but it damn sure is medicine for many.

@jananeli @PoppotGroup @guyfelicella At some point, handing out supplies without moving people toward sobriety stops being compassionate and starts becoming supervised collapse.

@PoppotGroup @guyfelicella Yes harm reduction keeps people alive longer- that’s what it’s supposed to do. Harm reduction is often part of first steps towards going to treatment. It’s where people start asking for other options, gather information, start making phone calls, applications and appointments…

The conservative playbook: Blame harm reduction for “enabling addiction” …instead of blaming organized crime profiting off a toxic drug supply. Shut down the very services that keep people alive. Then criminalize people for using in public after removing the safer places to go. Arrest them, cycle them through courts, and fill up prisons. All while ignoring the real solutions: housing, mental health care, addiction treatment. This isn’t about fixing anything, it’s about optics over outcomes.

This framing removes all personal agency and acts like addiction is only society’s fault. Compassion matters. Treatment matters. Mental health care matters. But “harm reduction” without accountability can absolutely enable destructive behavior and normalize open-air drug use and disorder. At some point, “harm reduction” just becomes end-of-life care on the street.
Parents Opposed to Pot@PoppotGroup

@guyfelicella Harm reduction rarely gets people into treatment. It only delays death or guarantees brain damage. If you save a life with naloxone, you must rebuild a life and put people in drug rehabilitation.

This study is being oversold. A short-term cannabinoid supplement trial with self-reported sleep improvements is not proof marijuana is a safe or effective long-term sleep medicine. Cannabis is also linked to tolerance, dependency, rebound insomnia, and disrupted sleep in chronic users.
Marc Landers@marclanders

Struggling to sleep? This cannabinoid supplement boosted sleep quality, eased insomnia! Compared to the placebo, the cannabinoid supplement significantly improved: Sleep quality and efficiency (how well people slept). Insomnia symptoms (fewer sleep problems). Overall health and quality of life. Anxiety improved significantly for the cannabinoid group. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39980821/

The study did NOT show cannabis cures stomach cancer in humans. It studied cannabinoid receptor activity in cancer cells under laboratory conditions. Cancer cells in a dish are not the same thing as treating an actual patient. Researchers can kill or slow cancer cells in vitro with all kinds of substances — bleach, radiation, toxins, chemotherapy compounds, etc. That does not mean they become safe or effective medicines in humans.

Older adults are actually one of the highest-risk groups for cannabis complications: falls, dizziness, confusion, impaired driving, drug interactions, dependency, and worsening cognition.
Grinspoon: Grinspoon on Drugs@Peter_Grinspoon

Older adults are using cannabis more than ever. For some, it may mean less pain, better sleep, fewer pills, and a better quality of life. The difference often comes down to dose, product, timing, and good medical guidance. Read more. medpagetoday.com/opinion/second…

“Older adults are using cannabis more than ever” is a trend, not proof it’s helping them. This article is opinion commentary, not clinical evidence. And older adults are actually one of the highest-risk groups for cannabis complications: falls, dizziness, confusion, impaired driving, drug interactions, dependency, and worsening cognition. “Some people say they feel better” is not the same as proving safety or effectiveness. The modern THC industry keeps marketing cannabis as a wellness product while downplaying the very real risks; especially for vulnerable populations.

Big Cannabis Sold You a Lie. Now the Federal Government Is Giving It to Your Grandparents. Bombshell lawsuits, a European safety bombshell, and a rogue Medicare program converge in the most dangerous moment in American cannabinoid policy history. They said it could treat your anxiety, your pain, your PTSD, your insomnia, your opioid addiction, your cancer, your irritable bowel syndrome, your grief, your boredom, your sadness, and your shyness. They built billion dollar companies on those claims. They hired lobbyists, funded public relations campaigns, and placed their products in gleaming dispensaries designed to look like Apple Stores - all while knowing, according to explosive new federal lawsuits, that the science behind those claims was weak, nonexistent, or flatly contradicted by the research they chose not to tell you about. According to the complaints, these companies marketed cannabis products as medicine capable of treating a staggering list of conditions - insomnia, narcolepsy, cancer, auto-immune disorders, neuropathy, pain, anxiety, PTSD, opioid addiction, and more... #Cannabis newswire.com/news/big-canna…

This was not a randomized placebo-controlled trial proving cannabis treats migraines. It was largely based on self-reported outcomes from medical cannabis patients already expecting benefit. That matters because migraines are extremely vulnerable to placebo effects, expectation bias, regression to the mean, and natural symptom fluctuation. Also left out: cannabis can itself cause rebound headaches, dependency, cognitive problems, and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome in some chronic users.

Four reasons why @GovernorShapiro is wrong about pushing for recreational use of marijuana: “Marijuana products are today of unprecedented high potency, are often highly processed, aggressively advertised, and often packaged to appeal to minors.”
Luke Niforatos@LukeNiforatos

"The commercialization of marijuana plays a role in the normalization of use, increases access to it, and decreases perception of risk of harm among youth."
