Originally recorded in February 1993, the Garcia, @David_Grisman, and Tony Rice collaboration known as "The Pizza Tapes" was released on this day in 2000. "I wish there were words that would express my gratitude for being a part of it. Perhaps just knowing that Garcia might be smiling somewhere saying, "Dawg can we hear that take again?" will suffice." - Tony Rice. youtu.be/Q-fdaaNAyt0?si…

@jeffreybloomer I saw Chris and Oliver play once in Atlanta in like 2005 when I lived there not realizing that Oliver was well known in the local scene. Honestly I haven't delved

@SuprAnnoydMario Was just talking to the homie that they were the biggest gift of that era. As I’ve gotten older my love of their more experimental free jazz zones has only grown with my similar tastes. If haven’t spun the recent medeski Moore Cline Skerik sets they are absolutely bonkers

@ZigaBoogalooo Those sets they've been doing with Nels Cline have been insane. I hope they keep doing them and that I can be there at least once

I remember when I first started drum lessons and tried to get my teacher to groove along to Last chance to dance trance, and he couldn't quite catch it. He turned me on to Dreamtheater though

@20th_Centurygal I wasn't there during the Jerry days but I've heard stories about the enormous sound at Grateful Dead shows in the late 80s through 1990

On this day in 1984, the Dead kicked off the East Coast leg of their Spring ‘84 tour in Virginia’s Hampton Coliseum. Dead Heads aboard the “mothership” would experience the first and only "Keep Your Day Job” opener in the band’s history. Set one was chock-full over covers including “Minglewood Blues,” “It’s All Over Now,” and “Beat It Down The Line.” The band’s originals made their way into set two with performances of “Truckin’,” “Scarlet Begonias,” and an encore of “U.S. Blues.” Photos from Buddy Norris / Daily Press and Mark Currie

And, on the other hand, I just heard Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings do a version of “Brokedown Palace” that brought tears to my eyes and I remembered: There is nothing is as good as the music of The Grateful Dead
