A medieval palace in the English countryside has a small bell mounted by a window, with a rope hanging down to the moat below. Since the 1850s, the resident swans have been pulling the rope to ring the bell when they want to be fed. The tradition began when one of the bishop’s daughters taught it to a single swan in the 1850s, and the swans have been passing it on ever since. The current pair, Grace and Gabriel, are the latest in the line. Each year, after their cygnets hatch, Gabriel walks them up to the bell and teaches them to pull the rope before they leave the moat to start their own lives. The tradition is now 170 years old.

@JamesMelville Correct. Neither Starmer nor Boris Johnston, to name a present and recent leader, are/were statesmen. Charles learnt the role from childhood, but some leaders are naturals as were Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill. Important for political parties to choose well.

I’m no royalist, but King Charles is giving a masterclass on sophisticated diplomacy on his US visit. He’s combining charm while displaying dry humour at Donald Trump’s expense. In effect, he’s displaying the type of characteristics that are completely beyond Keir Starmer.

Tesla has paid $0 in federal taxes in 19 of the last 20 years despite reporting $264 billion in revenue.

@DanQayyum Charles' speech went over Trump's head. Doubt he could make head nor tail out of it. It's not like he's blessed with a great command of the English language.

What did Charles actually do? He praised NATO in front of its loudest critic. He championed climate action in front of a climate denier. He called for interfaith dialogue during an administration that has banned citizens from Muslim-majority countries. He praised checks and balances on executive power to a room full of lawmakers who have been unable to exercise them. He referenced the Middle East crisis that is currently straining the alliance he was there to celebrate. He defended the Royal Navy after Trump publicly insulted it. And he did all of this while receiving standing ovations, bipartisan laughter, and a dinner invitation.

@dmweisberger @RobertKennedyJr Some fantastic observations here about the quality of food in Italy vs the US. Mind you, I didn't fare as well in Italy, especially the bread, but we are individual in our responses to various foods anywhere.

I just spent 2 incredible weeks in Italy and it is so frustrating to come back to the U.S… How is it possible @RobertKennedyJr that the Italian food supply is so vastly superior. I literally ate bread at every meal, dessert multiple times per day, and generally ate way more than I do in the U.S. Not once did I have acid reflux. Not one headache, no digestive problems, and I didn’t gain any weight. If I ate the same way in the U.S. (I used to at times) I would have gone through a full bottle of Tums and Advil just to get through the day… WHY does the U.S. allow glyphosate in wheat, high fructose corn syrup in food and who knows what in our milk products? The difference in quality of life in Italy vs the U.S. is staggering from their common sense (anti corporate) food regulation. WHY aren’t more people upset about this? The U.S. is the richest country in the world and we eat like one of the poorest.
