Mike Mazzei is pushing to move Oklahoma state employee pensions from traditional defined-benefit plans to 401(k)-style accounts to benefit his investment advisor friends who will make more (just like Stitt’s recent no bid contract for state investment management). This is about how he and those close to him can profit from tax dollars, not about helping the stare. Defined benefit pensions run at low institutional fees (under 0.25% or less) on one professionally managed pool with no per-person upsells. Converting billions in state plan assets to individual 401(k)s creates the exact layered fee machine: recordkeeping, investment management, advisory, plus lucrative rollovers and participant services, where investment advisors and connected firms make far more money. Large new public plans become recurring revenue goldmines for Mazzei and his allies. That’s why these conversions keep getting proposed, even though studies show DB plans deliver lower net costs through scale and pooling.

Every cut of every animal ever domesticated by human civilization available in one refrigerated aisle at ten in the morning on a Tuesday. The Germans stood in the meat section for forty five minutes. In silence. Processing. They finally understand why we do not have trains. We have roads wide enough for the cars we actually drive. Parking lots the size of small European countries. Airports in every city worth visiting. Why would we need trains. The Germans are taking ranch home by the bottle. The Dutch found queso and briefly lost the ability to speak. The Japanese are photographing HEB like it is the Louvre. The Czechs are weeping in West, Texas. Welcome to America. Everything is free, enormous, air conditioned, comes with chips, and has five grocery stores within a mile that will sell you any cut of any animal you have ever imagined. Write that down. 🦋
