Dougie, the Reflecting Pool isn’t the landmark. The Reflecting Pool reflects the landmark. Nobody travels to Washington to admire the color of the bottom of the pool. They come to see the Lincoln Memorial reflected in the water. Painting the bottom “American Flag Blue” doesn’t preserve the Lincoln Memorial for future generations. It paints the bottom of a man-made basin. And if the goal is preserving it for generations, how exactly does changing the color accomplish that? The pool has struggled with algae, water quality, leaks, and maintenance issues for decades. Those problems are caused by water, filtration, weather, sunlight, and aging infrastructure, not by the color of the bottom. The pool has undergone major renovations before, including a complete reconstruction and filtration upgrades, yet algae and maintenance problems kept returning. Summer heat, sunlight, organic matter, and water conditions don’t magically disappear because the bottom is blue. In fact, the whole purpose of a reflecting pool is to create a reflective surface. Once it’s full of water, visitors won’t be staring at the coating anyway. They’ll be looking at the reflection of the Lincoln Memorial, exactly as they always have. So let’s stop pretending painting the bottom blue is some historic preservation achievement. At best it’s a cosmetic change. At worst it’s a taxpayer-funded vanity project that will look almost exactly the same once the pool is filled with water. All for $13.7 million taxpayer dollars.
