The legislation establishes a seven-member committee led by a retired High Court judge to determine fee structures for all private schools, which will remain binding for three academic years. 👉🏽 This move comes as parents have been grappling with escalating education costs, with CBSE and ICSE schools charging between ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh annually, whilst the implementation date will be announced through an official notification shortly. Committee to Bring Uniformity in Fee Structure 👉🏽 The new law mandates the formation of a regulatory committee comprising representatives from diverse stakeholders, including a State Parent-Teacher Association representative, the School Education Director, representatives from private schools and primary education, a Joint Chief Engineer from the Public Works Department, and an official from the School Education Department. Parents have long voiced concerns about financial strain, with Chennai resident Chandni Surana noting she paid ₹1.3 lakh for kindergarten admission, highlighting how societal pressures and the desire for quality education leave families with limited choices. Background: A Decade-Long Regulatory Challenge 👉🏽 Tamil Nadu has operated under the Tamil Nadu Schools (Regulation of Collection of Fee) Act since 2009, though its effectiveness has been limited by judicial interventions and resistance from private institutions. The Supreme Court's 2016 interim orders exempted CBSE and ICSE schools from the Fee Determination Committee's jurisdiction, leading to unchecked annual increases.
