There isn’t much that surprises me these days, but the failure of this government to learn the lessons from the Cummings era is one of them. What message does this briefing send to the entire civil service, never mind anyone thinking of joining government in a senior role?

Writing has been on the wall for Chris Wormald for months - as @rowenamason revealed last July. She reported that Keir Starmer’s No 10 increasingly had “buyer’s remorse” about the cab sec who at that point ha only been running civil service for six months. Multiple sources told her people around Starmer were growing to view the choice as “disastrous” for the prospects of radical reform of civil service and had begun to explore options for how to work around him. One said Wormald was viewed as “insipid” and prone to wringing his hands about problems rather than coming up with solutions, and was too entrenched in the status quo.
