ALICE UPDATE ❤️💔 Alice is still in hospital, Veterinary Specialists Ireland . Sadly, we lost another weak puppy a couple of hours ago 💔 Our hearts are breaking for her. She is fighting with everything she has, trying to get through this while still feeding her babies despite how weak she is. She’s only a baby herself, and yet she’s showing unimaginable strength. We are all rooting for her. She has to make it. 💔❤️Poor, brave Alice gave birth to 11 tiny puppies 💔 After 24 exhausting hours in labour, she went through so much. We had to rush her to the emergency vet, where she needed three injections just to help her through. The toll on her little, fragile body has been heartbreaking, she’s only a baby herself. 💔 Out of the 11 puppies, one sadly didn’t make it. Our hearts are with that little soul 💔 But the others are doing well, and Alice is finally resting, though she’s completely exhausted. We’re feeding her every couple of hours to help rebuild her strength and give her the care she so desperately needs. We keep thinking… if we hadn’t rescued her in time, she wouldn’t have survived this. It’s truly unimaginable 💔 If you can, please consider donating to help support Alice and her puppies. Remembering the Hero Fire Dog Kai 🚒🫡🐾🌈💔 The world dimmed a little more 7 march 2023, but the sky gained a new bright star. Fire dog Kai left this mortal plain and crossed rainbow bridge Kai spent his whole life working as a fire investigation search dog for West Midlands Fire Service. Only retiring January 2023 after losing his sight overnight to a brain tumour 💔 Devastatingly passed away just two months after his diagnosis. When the devastating news came in that Kai had a brain tumour, Mat and Kai began their palliative care journey. Kai was as happy as ever, and no clue anything was changing 💔 and loved every second of his retirement Mat spent every day filling his time with as many adventures and moments of pure love and devotion to Kai not knowing how much time they had left together. Kai loved his work and had an amazing relationship with Mat, and any day, doing anything as long as Mat was there was the greatest day for Kai Kai's main duty was to determine whether arson had been committed by sniffing out whether an accelerant had been used to start a fire. 2013, a very special puppy was born in Hilbrae Rescue Kennels after his mum was taken in by the centre in Shropshire. Kai, the Belgian Shepherd Malinois, was adopted by Mat Dixon and began the start of a wonderful and very unusual relationship. ​Mat just happened to be a firefighter with the West Midlands Fire Service, and with Kai’s natural intelligence and boundless energy, he was destined to become one of only 15 fire investigation dogs in the UK. Mat trained Kai to detect flammable liquids at fire scenes where arson is suspected. Kai’s job was arduous and physically demanding, which meant he had to be extremely fit and agile. Fire scenes are never tidy, and there’s a lot of squeezing through narrow spaces and negotiating rough and potentially dangerous terrain, and Kai never hesitated ​​Kai thrived in his job as an active fire team member and loved being with Mat. When off duty, Mat competes in marathons, and because Kai was so full of enthusiasm and love for Mat, they would regularly go running together. Undoubtedly, Kai was an integral member of the team with his handler, Mat Dixon, played a vital role in their fire investigation work. We know his guardian Mat misses him very much and Kai will be watching over him and his family. They belong to people who are homeless or vulnerable people who often have very little, but still give everything they can to the one companion who never judges them. These dogs walk the streets beside their owners every day.
They sleep wherever their owners can find shelter.
They share whatever food is available. For many vulnerable people, their dog is their only family, their only comfort, and their reason to keep going. Our sanctuary helps support these dogs when their owners are struggling , through foster placements, food, and veterinary care when it’s needed most. That moment ended his life as a matador, but it opened another path. Múnera became a vocal critic of bullfighting and animal abuse. He spoke to students, wrote about his transformation, and worked alongside groups defending animals. He taught that empathy matters more than tradition, and that real bravery can mean refusing to harm when harm is expected. Many accused him of betraying his culture. Others laughed at the idea that compassion could outweigh applause. He did not back down. The man who once killed for cheers chose instead to stand for mercy. His story reminds us that no custom is beyond question, and no life is locked into a single role. Sometimes everything changes in one instant. One look. One choice. One quiet decision to walk away.

RIP little Nugget. His operation took 6 hours and he made it through. But 2 hour later his little body gave up as we feared it might. We help a lot of dogs but it still broke us all to lose this little gentleman yesterday. 💔
