The BC government’s own website says reconciliation requires government to “listen to other interested parties such as government agencies, the business community and others.” So why are these sweeping negotiations and agreements being conducted with so little public transparency and consultation with British Columbians? You can’t claim transparency and public engagement while shutting the public out of the process.

PLUS has obtained FOI records revealing years of BC government negotiations with the Tahltan toward a sweeping “Foundation Agreement” involving land and governance transfers, Aboriginal title recognition, and Crown authority across 11% of B.C. More than 400 pages were withheld from disclosure. The public still has not been told what this Tahltan-BC agreement is or whether it has already been finalized, even though released records included completion timelines that have already passed. This is not a treaty process. It is certainly not a public process. The supermarket label changes from Hereford to Mato Grosso. This is presented as the ethical position. It is the most expensively packaged self-deception in modern politics.

David Eby’s outrageous reaction to the Carney-Smith pipeline deal says everything about why British Columbia is falling behind. When Alberta and the federal government sit down to plan a new bitumen pipeline to our West Coast, a project that will deliver up to 800,000 jobs over its lifetime with a lion’s share right here in British Columbia, Eby’s response is to call it “rewarding bad behaviour.” Unbelievable. This is ideology over opportunity. While Eby blocks, delays, and lectures, he is not just destroying British Columbia’s economic growth. He is holding back the future of the entire country. British Columbians are tired of saying no to jobs. We are tired of watching prosperity flow south or stay locked in Alberta. We are tired of a Premier who puts anti-energy dogma ahead of working families. As Premier, I will take a completely different approach. I will welcome responsible pipeline expansion to British Columbia with open arms. This is a core pillar of my Western Alliance vision. I will build a bold new partnership with Alberta and Saskatchewan to create energy corridors, supercharge our economy, create thousands of high-paying jobs, upgrade our highways, rail lines and ports, and finally deliver the prosperity that Ottawa has never been able to provide.
