I found my wife in bed with another man, eleven weeks into our marriage.
The dry cleaning was still in my hand when I opened the door.
I remember that detail because I dropped it, and the receipt slid under the couch, and later that was the thing I kept thinking about instead of the actual scene in front of me. The receipt. Not her face.
I was supposed to be at a conference in Charlotte until Sunday. It ended a day early. Nobody tells you that the worst moments of your life often start with something as boring as a scheduling change.
I did not yell. I want to be honest about that because it surprises people.
I just stood in the doorway of my own bedroom, holding a dry cleaning bag with my good suit in it, and said her name once, quiet, like I was checking if this was actually real or if I had walked into the wrong apartment.
He grabbed his jeans off the floor.
She said my name back, except it came out like a question, like she was the one confused about what was happening.
Here is the detail I have never told anyone. The ring was still on her hand. She had not taken it off. Somehow that made it worse.
I did not ask who he was. I did not ask how long. I just said "the dry cleaning is in the hallway" and walked back out the front door, down four flights of stairs, and sat in my car for two hours before I could make my hands work the ignition.
We were married eleven weeks. Eleven weeks.
I don't know what hurts more, the two hours I sat in that car, or the eleven weeks I had already planned life with her before I found out what she really was.
Would you have stayed in the doorway and demanded answers, or walked out the way I did?
